Just so I don't make a complete ass of myself talking to controllers, I was
hoping someone here might know of a website where a basic rundown is given
of appropriate comm procedures.

Example: must one request start-up?
How about clearance for pushback?
Do controllers generally use RL comm procedures or FS comm procedures?
What frequency to use when?

That sorta thing....
I did a Google, but all I got were RL comm procedures.

I don't have a link except to the training resources at vatsim or ivao which
is quite long and I suspect you want to get going quickly. Here is a brief
overview.

The procedures used by ATC is real world. Bear in mind some controllers have
real world experience others are trained like myself although I have real
world experience as a pilot which helped a lot
..
File your flight plan in SB3. Select aircraft type, livery etc etc

SB3 window displays controllers nearest to you and their frequencies.

Tune freq in radio on com 1 for nearest controller ...could either be ground
/Tower/Dep/Approach or a Center. The freq and controller will automatically
set SB3 to voice/text depending on the controllers set up. Voice is very
common although some controllers still feel uncomfortable and revert to
text. Choice is also yours in SB3.

Call and request clearance as filed

Controller will issue clearance with any other req...e.g. fly rwy hdg climb
to 6000 ft etc etc.

Read back clearance

Request pushback and taxi to active

Controller will clear to taxi to active, hold short or pos and hold and them
clear for take off

Once airborne handoffs will start if all positions staffed so be ready for
Tower to hand off to dep/app and then to Center fro final cruise.

Expect reverse on arrival.

Takes some practice but its not too difficult

In brief though, procedures will vary from airport to airport and depending
on what a/c you fly. If you want a gentle introduction, take your favoruite
light aircraft along to a small field where the controller will have time to
talk you through things. I currently control at Biggin Hill in the UK (EGKB)
on VATSIM and am on there most evenings when I can be.

Another good way is simply to connect up at a busy field and sit on the
apron, just listening to ATC going on around. If you file a flight plan that
says something like "Observing ATC comms only", then the controllers won't
bother you.

An alternative is to download the controller software, and then connect up
as an observer. This again gives you plenty of opportunity to sit quietly
and observe comms.

You will find a wealth of info on the VATSIM sites (and not to be biased,
I'm sure IVAO would be just as helpful, though I have no experience of
that).

As a final point, in Europe you will likely find that the comms procedures
used aren't quite the same as in the AI FS comms, since those are based on
American procedures.

I intend to fly on VATSIM, where I already have an account.
Weird thing is that I ran SB3 to test it everything, I logged in using my
account info and no problems. But getting into the PRC is a no-go.
I've e-mailed them, so I'm awaiting a reply from them.
Until then I can't get into the PRC.

I had a look on IVAO and was amazed at how much of a run-around I get from
that site. I'll spend some more time on it tonight and have a closer look.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years....if you want to do it
right, don't do it quickly.

I've come across manuals that take hours to read (top to bottom) in order
to fully understand the aircraft or procedures. So I've learned to make
more time for reading manuals.

That's pretty much the same as the transmissions in the sim.
(with that I mean between the sim-ATC and the sim-pilot)

I guess I was hoping there was more to it since it sounds so different on
the scanner. Much faster, sometimes impossible to understand, and then
ofcourse there's the language/accent thing that will be weird to get used
to for a regular simmer.

That's a very helpful site. Now bookmarked and ready to read.
Good to know you're at Biggin Hill. I started a round-the-world trip from
there just a little while ago and I've been to the airshow last year (I
flew in on a MAC DC-3!).

I think Biggin Hill might be a good place for some training.

You may have already done this Marcel. But did you get yourself another
password for the PRC? You use your user ID for Vatsim but you can't use the
password you use for Vatsim. Follow the link on the right hand side of the
PRC login page to get your PRC password.
