I have a gigabyte z390 aorus pro wifi that came in the mail today for a new PC build
  • i7 9700k
  • 2x8gb corsair vengeance

It freezes on the Aorus splash screen after a few spins with a usb boot media inserted, but fine with kb + mouse. .

I verified that my usb windows media is good by testing on another computer. I tried running only 1 stick of each memory in each slot. I tried unplugging every front panel connector except the power switch.

XMP profiles will not boot successfully, only default settings. Only working config: CPU @ 4.6GHZ, mem @ 2133MHZ (even though it is rated for 3000MHz)

Also, on one of the failed boot attempts there was some graphical nonsense on the screen. However, only once.

Any ideas? I really don't want to RMA my motherboard just for it to be an issue with my CPU or something else altogether... ram, short circuit, whatever..

So even if you do think it is a dead motherboard, let me know to give me some confidence and hope. Thank you!

Solution
Have you tried removing all of your overclocks first?
Is this a brand new build entirely?
CPU failures are pretty rare, so outside of the OC, I'd be looking at a BIOS or MB problem potentially.
What is your PSU make and model just to verify?

Yes. In fact, never attempted to get any overclocks to work. But for some reason in the hardware monitor it is reporting the current core frequency as the turbo boost frequency (4.6GHz). I find this odd because the CPU should be mostly idle in the BIOS right? That's why I said 4.6GHz in the original post. The regular speed is 3.6GHz. I disabled turbo boost and still the same issue.

Also, I've noticed through doing this that I can't click on a majority of options under CPU frequency settings in my BIOS. I had to double-click on turbo boost options like 10 times to get it to respond... Odd..

Yes. brand new build.

I am using a RM650x power supply.

Thanks for your response!

Update:
The solution was simply to update the BIOS. The F8 that comes with Aorus Z390 does not work properly, even though it is supposed to support 9th gen processors out of the box.
