I saw it last night. An excellent flick.

Sure was! In many ways superior to the first volume, especially in
that...

....there was MUCH more of the patented Tarantino banter that many
(including some on this very NG) felt was lacking in the first. The
stories the characters told each other, the explanations of their
motives, the humorous observations of pop culture (LOVED Bill's
analysis of superhero comics!) were all vintage Tarantino. This one
was also a lot funnier than the first one, which might seem odd as
it's far more brutal...

And not just in the action scenes (the Bride's fight with Elle made
her fight with Vernita seem like a game of hopscotch), but in the
sheer sadism of the treatment fo the Bride, esp in the first half hour
of the film. Still, these are Hard People, so what do you expect?

I did have a problem with some of the character's actions, however.
Why does the Bride recklessly charge thru Bud's front door when she
*knows* he's sitting right in front of it, waiting for trouble? Why
does Bud trust Elle enough to turn his back on her after getting his
money? Why does a certain villain never get killed?

While many complained that Vol. 1's characters were too thin, I can
imagine that those who liked the first one will have trouble sitting
through the extensive character backgrounds and build-ups while
waiting for the mayhem. They miss the point. The first scene,
recounting the wedding massacre that put the Bride into her coma, is
an exercise in exquisite torture as we wait for the hammer that we
already know is coming, to finally fall...This movie is the payoff for
the first episode's teaser.

Tarantino's mastery of his filmmaking craft has never been better:
synchronized split screens, black and white, darkness and sound,
genre-appropriate SFX and quick zooms (the entire audience applauded
at that part!)...I didn't get why the movie switched to full-screen
format at one point, tho...^^

Apparently, there have been some scenes (shown in the trailers) that
aren't in the movie...even more reason to drool for the DVD
release...I've been hearing a lot of rumors that T is making a third
(a prequel? I'd love to see who was so badass it required ALL the
Deadly Vipers to take down), but I'm sure that the usual fanwank
speculation...and, despite what I was told, there IS a little
something after the end credits...^^

I think the more "closed in" screen ratio was supposed to convey
claustrophobia. Which is entirely appropriate, given the scene in question.

They miss that the "flat" characters are given fullness by the completion of
Vol 2. Since they aren't two movies. They're ONE movie, split down the
middle. This is like complaining that Frodo shouldn't have been redeemed
because if you watch his actions in RotK, he's just a morose, bag-eyed
pussy. His actions have no resonance until you know where he's been and
what he's done.

Tarintino gave us two characters that we see develop throughout the film,
instead of developing two characters and then having the action (which, to
be honest, always makes the third act weak). He just used the methods of
storyteling in reverse this time. Because this way, the final confrontation
being what it is, makes the movie that much better, and more fulfilling than
mindless action (like with the Crazy 88's, though that was a lot of fun).

SPOILERS!

No. A sequel. This time The Bride isn't the hero, she's Bill.

If you watch Volume 1, you'll know EXACTLY who the next hero is. Hint: the
next film won't be made for about 15 years.

I love the action that happens on camera after the word "Cut".

Then each movie should have been half-price...^~

I agree, tho I can see the opposite argument: If people were turned
off by certain aspects of the first film, then why should they expect
vol. 2 to be any different, *esp* as it's being touted as simply the
other half of a single film...

This reminds me of my friends who complain that, however cool the
eventual payoff in later episodes, there's still no excuse for anime
series to open with a dragging, lackluster style, and just assume that
the audience is going to hang around till it kicks in...(heard this
complaint about Witch Hunter Robin ALOT, btw)

Tarantino did the opposite, as you say...but you also implicitely
admit that having all the action at the beginning may have made the
opening "weak" (narratively speaking)...of course, people who like
that sort of thing, but dislike all the talky bits, will probably feel
the other way around...

FWIW, I, like many others I know, liked both Volumes pretty much
equally well, for different reasons...

When I heard this, I assumed T was joking...having actually *read* his
comments, now I'm not so sure...It makes sense that Sofie would fund
little whatshername...I also assume that's why Elle was left alive, to
be the Blind Master providing her training...imagine growing up
surrounded by maimed people, who were raising you to take revenge on
the one who did that to them...Maybe she'll wind up good friends with
BB (after being deadly enemies first, of course; kinda like Lucita and
Fatima...)^^

Seeing this a second time, I realize that that's a scene from Vol. 1,
and not 2...horay for foreshadowing!^__^

Dex,
who wonders if Bill knew that Elle had killed Pai Mei...

I actually suspect, despite the credits leaving it an open question, that it's
fairly unlikely Elle would get out of the trailer without being bitten by the
Black Mamba.

She was all ready bitten by the Black Mamba. She lost the eye, remember?
^_~

Ok...funnies aside...I don't think it's that unlikely at all. This IS the
movie where The Bride went and killed or dismembered the Crazy 88, was shot
at point blank range in teh head, and climed out of a coffin buried under a
ton of dirt.

Yes, but that's the Bride. Elle's a pussy who had to *poison* Pai Mei.

It's also unlikely that she completed her training, seeing as, well, he died
