app short cuts used to be on left hand page margin ..now gone

suddenly yesterday , I switched on my PC using edge and windows 10, and discovered all my app shortcuts were gone from left hand margin of page, now I have to pull up a full page of all apps to find the one I want

Do you mean just in the start menu? You can change the way the apps listing shows in start menu by going to settings/Personalisation/Start
2nd option down says "Show apps in start menu"
turn it on to show them, otherwise the start menu will add a button in the far left column saying "All Apps", you have to click it to show the list

Only way to get app shortcuts on desktop (unless you mean icons) is to run in tablet mode
