I've long wondered about this sort of thing after reading fanboy rants on various hardware platforms, including Apple. On a broader perspective, I suspect that political ideologies as well as "my brand fannishness" are replacing religion in some people's lives, offering the same sense of belonging and "being on the right side of things." It also satisfies a more self-centered mindset, not requiring those tiresome "doing good for your fellow human beings" things.
It has another serious downside, though. An early Church father, named Anselm once opined that faith needs to seek out reason and understanding. (Faith needs to be consistent and coherent.) I'd say that's true of any belief system, even one in the omnipotent Jobs.
For me, hardware is a means to an end and nothing more. I'm very utilitarian. I don't like Apple because it's too limited in hardware choices and too "our way is the only way" in software functionality. It just doesn't work for me.
