[citation][nom]alikum[/nom]I think you're making a mistake. It is 6970M, a mobility version and it is NOT comparable to a 6850. Not even close.[/citation]

That is where you are wrong. Look for the review and you will see it has the 960 PU, the same number of ROPS, etc,. it is just clocked lower than its desktop counterpart

[citation][nom]iam2thecrowe[/nom]everyone i've spoken to who owns the previous model to these (about 4 people) say they get incredibly hot and can feel the heat radiating from them just sitting in front of it. Hopefully they find a way to disperse heat better. In the end you get a hot box with limited functionality, which is fine if you only have limited applications you wish to use. For everyone else, there is windows. There is a good reason windows still dominates. Unfortunately most people who buy macs buy them because salespeople told them they are better, faster, more reliable, less prone to viruses etc; which is all bogus.[/citation]
+1

Well, read my later posts to see why I said it's not close.

Dude, Windows dominates because of Microsoft's past monopolistic practices not because it is that good. Which they successfully used to drove competition into extinction. That's why the had so many anti-trust lawsuits. Learn history before posting nonsense.

By the way. After using Macs and PCs for ten years I can say I curse more often at my Windows desktop than at my Mac's. The reason? I think Mac OS is easier, better designed and more intuitive than Windows. It takes me less time and effort to do stuff on Mac than on Windows. Besides, there is not a single think today that I cannot do at both Mac and Windows so that sorry excuse that Mac's are only limited for certain tasks is false. And now, thanks to Steam I can even play a lot of the same games available for Windows. Too bad I don't play games anymore.

[citation][nom]alikum[/nom]And by the way, I'm comparing the numbers with my own Sapphire 6850 toxic[/citation]

Right... so you're comparing an over-clocked desktop GPU to its stock clocked mobile variant that has slightly lower clocks. How does that make sense? And yes, the HD 6850 is faster, but not by much. Like I said, it's only 12% faster overall.

It's not supposed to make sense. Does having mobile graphics in a desktop iMac make sense to you?

[citation][nom]ack[/nom]But that's the problem with all-in-ones. Not expendable and (already) outdated way before the monitor is.[/citation]
The old 27" iMac can be used as an external display for another computer with a display port. (which are quite common these days).

The new iMac can most likely do the same through thunderbolt. Wonder if we'll see thunderbolt graphics cards any time soon....

[citation][nom]eddieroolz[/nom]2 years late much?[/citation]
Eh? The CPUs and graphics cards u see here were all released in 2011.

[citation][nom]fir_ser[/nom]As always, overpriced products from Apple.[/citation]
Name a single all-in-one this powerful or with displays this good.
U can't.

Apple hasn't cared for 13 years that u can buy/build an equally powerful box + separate display for less. They are not going to start now.
People don't want an ugly box and lots of cables under their desk. What's the point of spending lots of money on stylish furniture if it's all ruined by an ugly computer?

U can have an iMac on your desk and all u need is a single cable.

Glad some people countered the annoying "overpriced" whining with facts. The rest of you should be banned from using technology because you have the education of a 12 year old fanboy. It will always amuse me how many PC users are threatened by Apple that they #$@& out so much vitriol. The lack of common sense amazes me. It would be entertaining if it wasn't so sad at the same time.

[citation][nom]alikum[/nom]It's not supposed to make sense. Does having mobile graphics in a desktop iMac make sense to you?[/citation]

I too was dubious about the performance of the 6970m as stated by appleblowsdonkeyballs and it turns out he was right. I assumed it couldn't be possible since from what I remember the mobile versions of all gpus were incredibly underpowered and didn't come near the performance of even its previous generation desktop counter part. But these days advancements have been made and the performances are now almost equal to its desktop variants. Here is the 6970m review: http://tinyurl.com/3jezasu

As to your comment of it it makes sense to put a mobile version on this product then yes it does since a mobile version is smaller than the desktop counterpart and there is less room available on these thingamajig iMacs.

I'll still have to make a comparable system on newegg to see if this iMac is well priced.

[citation][nom]alikum[/nom]It's not supposed to make sense. Does having mobile graphics in a desktop iMac make sense to you?[/citation]

Yes, it makes perfect sense. Or did you forget the form factor this is in? Stop whining. The 6970M is just as fast as a modern Performance desktop GPU.

[citation][nom]WHComp[/nom]Ridiculously overpriced, but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.[/citation]
Please go out, try to find one then price a 2560 x 1440 27" monitor for me then smack yourself and wake up. The 27" iMac is not priced bad at all.

For this monitor with these features, the price isn't all that bad. Would a PC be about $200 bucks cheaper? Yea, it would. Is this upgradable, no it isn't, but these aren't all that bad. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that these Apple products aren't overpriced. However, anyone stating that these are random PC fanboys talking trash don't know what their talking about. Apples aren't more secure, in fact there less (no one see's the point to attack a small market, but will one day as it grows) they aren't faster, and the OS isn't laid out better (layout is simple an opinion). The advantage to having one of these is support since Apple only uses Apple products. Nice products though.

Blarney. I work in a lab of with new iMac's and they never get so hot that you can feel it from a distance. In fact, the only time I have ever had any heat issues with a Mac is when you put one of their laptops on a blanket or something and run it, but then what laptop would not have issues.

@the comment above posting the total cost and saying paying the addition $250 for an iMac may not be a bad idea. You forgot to add your OS costs, and various apps that come with the OS X. Add those and you have a pretty good deal. You also can get the Trackpad instead of a mouse for free, which is a great addition and nothing made for a Windows box even comes close to Apple's tactile products.

[citation][nom]appleblowsdonkeyballs[/nom]Actually, I forgot to add the motherboard. Add $100 for that and you get ~$1850. $150 to get it in this form factor, even if it's not very expandable, is a no-brainer.[/citation]

FINALLY!!! Someone with some sense that does not just jump on a bandwagon just because everyone else does. By the way, comes with the OS as well. All you have to do is do the actual math and suddenly you debunk allot of the arguments that people have.

If you want a machine for expandability, depending on what you want to expand, this thing is not for you. Period. Where it starts to get overpriced is when you are at the tail end of the models lifecycle which is when new hardware comes out. What people don't understand is that Apple do not change the price of there computers. So something that comes out May 5th 2011 is the same price May 1st 2012 then the update comes out with new hardware. This is where the overpriced argument comes in.

If you pay attention and are interested in buying a Mac then you know to try to purchase at the start of that models life cycle.

[citation][nom]wildwell[/nom]Nice to see the iMacs have gone all quad-core now.[/citation]

The last models where quads as well.

Firstly, I m typing this from my 13" macbook pro. Now, I just upgraded my PC system from my previous x6800 based Intel Processor (C2D), 680i sli mobo, DDR2 Ram, etc...

Here is the importance of my review- Because I was ABLE TO EXPAND, I only payed roughly $800 to future proof my computer for the next couple of years. If you buy an iMac then you will be shunted if you ever choose to upgrade. Sure, you can simply upgrade, but that requires you to buy a NEW iMac (another $2000.00)

Since, I upgraded on a PC I was able to use existing hardware and save big. All I had to do is buy a new mobo, ram, and CPU. DONE!

In the end it comes down to what you feel comfortable with doing:
If you have the funds buy a mac.
If you don't- finance.
If you don't- buy a PC.
If you do-do what makes the world a better place.

Just realize that there are hungry children all over the world who do not care about the fact that you new iMac only has one cable or that the keyboard/mouse are wireless.

Good luck.

[citation][nom]pkadair[/nom]Just realize that there are hungry children all over the world who do not care about the fact that you new iMac only has one cable or that the keyboard/mouse are wireless.[/citation]

And your point is? You tell us you are typing on your MBP, just spent money to upgrade your PC, and end with this. Are you saying you have buyers remorse and wish you had sent the money to Doctor's Without Borders or something?

The graphics data transmitted by thunderbolt is identical to displayport, so it's irrelevant. In fact in the macbook pro, the thunderbolt connector is a mini displayport connector. The downside of using Thunderbird is that you have a 10 Gbit/s limit while displayport has a limit of 17.28 Gbit/s

So why does Apple sell the Mac Pro?

I have heating issues on my mbp so does many other people.

Lack of common sense? lol

LG 21.5 inch IPS monitor = $ 199
Lian Li case = $ 69
biostar 1155 mobo= $ 70
core i5 2400 =$ 190
ram= $43
samsung DVD drive = $ 20
sapphire HD 5770= $ 114
cooler master elite 460 watts PSU= $ 40
seagate 500 GB HD= $ 40
HD web cam= $41
OS= 99

PRICE ater shipping and handling on newegg= $954.68

The starting iMac starts at 1200 dollars with with a 6750m no upgrade options for the future known over heating issues (yes imacs are known for having heat issues due to form factor) and this mid level system i just put together beats it in every possible benchmarks and allows for incremental upgrades whenever i want, OR i could simply buy an alienware desktop or some other high end boutique brand coupled with the IPAS monitor it would still be less than the iMac but with better parts, you complain about fanboi mentality then proceed to spew garbage with no real basis, the guy picked the most expensive PC parts and called it a "good comparison" when it really isn't you do not have to spend a 1000 dollars for a 27 inch IPS monitor from dell because unlike you we have the choice of OTHER brands with the same stuff at half the price no refrain from posting until you have gained a proper understanding of computer building....by the way i have a mac pro that i bought used a year ago as well as my hand built so this is not based on bias like your post
