[citation][nom]apple122juice[/nom]Easy defense. This is a CLOSED system. Apple build the h/w and s/w. They need to make sure software are optimized for the unit. Consumer may blame Apple for poor performance (like poor battery) that may be caused by 3rd party developer (i.e. Adobe). Does Kindle need to be able to use other readers?[/citation]
If Sony can be hit for removing Linux support on the PS3, (another supposedly closed system), then this was inevitable. Apparently these days if you make something it isn't yours any more.

While I was expecting something like this at some point, the part that cracks me up is that the FTC and DOJ are still trying to figure out who will bring the goods in this one...

[citation][nom]tacoslave[/nom]Obvious troll is obvious. Seriously though the European union sued microsoft for not bundling any other web browsers with their OS that they made and yet apple gets away with MUCH MUCH more. Anyone remember psystar?[/citation]
The EU did not sue MS for bundling IE, but rather for adding code that would break Windows if you tried to uninstall IE.

With that said, Apple's got lots of 'splainin to do!

[citation][nom]newmodeav[/nom]I hate what apple is doing.i just purchased an IPAD, and this stupid, expensive device not only does not have camera, it does not even have a microphone.it is obvious why, so we will spend another 1000$ in a years, just because we can do skype on this.and no flash playback, no wmv, no AVIwhat else is the technology world is waiting for?is APPLE going to dictate how to Eat, S, and Sleep?how far are we going to fall for the pretty slick looking devices they put out?i hate myself after buying the IPAD.[/citation]

I agree with others out here. Didn't you look at the specs? Or play with it at the Apple Store? I played with it for 5 mins and was already bored with it. For the same amount of money, I can get a laptop that can play at DVD, has 2 or more USB ports, has a SD slot, has 160Gig or more in storage, can rip cds to mp3, stream AVI's to my PS3 thru Tversity, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's a neat concept but that's all it is..."neat". The only thing I will give Apple are their displays. The clearest, brightest displays I have ever seen. But I'll give that up for a regular laptop anyday.

(ability to install another os)[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]If Sony can be hit for removing Linux support on the PS3, (another supposedly closed system), then this was inevitable. Apparently these days if you make something it isn't yours any more.[/citation]

sony was hit by a lawsuit because they removed an advertised feature (the ability to install another os) not because it's a closed system.

but if you compare the ipod/ipad/iphone to something like the ps3, 360, nds and all of those, then it is a closed system, anything to be considered an official product for the system has to be approved by apple. This was the huge change nintendo did with the nes in the 80's, preventing the mess that atari ended up with after losing their activision lawsuit. any game on a console has to go though an approval process just like any iapps do.(that's not to say the terms could be legally unfair, or apple has a good approval process or not, but just to show it's a closed system) If you want to develop on their system you need to play by their rules

all I have to say is

'ONE Button Mouse"

That is more then a reason to sue Apple.

If they can dictate to you what mouse you can use, I am sure they will find other ways to f you over.

Apple's options are always lacking/limited. And you thought Microsoft was evil? think again. Microsoft may have problems too, but nothing stops you from doing whatever you want to their system. You buy crap you get crap. Any company that limits you what you can do with your expensive toy is crap.

''the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission are locked in negotiations over who will launch an antitrust inquiry into Apple's new policy.''

LOL

Go get them!

[citation][nom]matt87_50[/nom]as a developer, Apple have absolutely no good reason to block the use of third party development tools.[/citation]

This is definately true. But Apple, as a corporation, has a very good reason. All the talk about the reasons why Apple won't allow things like flash (poor battery life, crashes, etc.) is all BS. The reason they don't allow flash is that is poses a serious threat to the app store. People could simply develop flash apps as a means of circumventing the app store. This is anti-competitive.

It does have a Microphone.....

It's not "yours" anymore if you sell it to someone. You might have certain legal liabilities for the product that you manufactured and sold but you certainly no longer "own" it once it is sold.

I'm far from a M$ fanboy and this is a little off topic but that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard! I remember that story when it first came out and couldn't believe that that was the outcome. So because people can use the Internet to Facebook and Tweet they are dumb enough to not be able to install another browser of their choice but force M$ to present them to competitors' browsers is f'n absurd. But it's alright that Apple is able to have safari on theirs? Sounds like Europeans simply don't like M$. Maybe those European countries who are in so much debt can sue M$ for having their own company and make some money that way...how lame.

A closed system is software and hardware made by one company only. The app store allows 3rd party software therefor it is not a closed system. You need to read up on your definitions ifan boy.

Besides, who wants a mommies blanket equivalent of a phone anyways. The only people who buy Apple products are losers who have to be spoon feed technology, and protected from the big bad web. Apple's app store practices must come to an end cause right now they think they are untouchable because they are a smaller company, but that is all about to change! I'm not even going to wish Apple good luck, cause they need to fall and fall hard.

stupid Apple.

I still can't believe they haven't been sued over the fact that their OS only comes with one web browser. They must feed money into the machine, they usually get away with too much, this is a step in the right direction

Apple does have other Browsers available on their OS. Opera Mini for example!

And you should hate yourself, but not for buying it so much, but for actually contemplating it in the first place. Do not buy a Yugo and then bicth cause it is junk or that there is no after market parts. You should have never thought of buying one to begin with.

Oh and Apple will never dictate anything about my life, because I'm smart enough to see their slight of hand tricks behind their Berlin Wall. Those that fall victim to Apple have no room to complain, as it is well known throughout the industry of the tactics they are pulling.

Relax people! Such Antitrust efforts doesn't hold water against Apple's so-called case. Loser would be Adobe (already it is) :)

[citation][nom]apple122juice[/nom]Easy defense: "This is a 'CLOSED' system; Apple build the h/w and s/w., blah blah..." They need to "make sure software are optimized for the unit." Fixed that for you.

Isn't the iPad a luxury item? If you don't like something about it, don't support it. Don't buy it. Don't write programs for it. Bottom Line: If Apple doesn't produce something that people want to buy, then the market will take care of the problem. I don't remember seeing Apple's iPad development standards protected (controlled) by the Bill of Rights?

STUPID STUPID APPLE

apple was halfway digging themselves out of a hole when they went to intel chips years ago.... now they are just going in reverse again and screwing themselves by making themselves overly proprietary!!!!

[citation][nom]twisted politiks[/nom]stupid Apple.I still can't believe they haven't been sued over the fact that their OS only comes with one web browser. They must feed money into the machine, they usually get away with too much, this is a step in the right direction[/citation]

um, even Microsoft, who made ONLY the OS and FORCED vendors to include IE and forced vendors to include their OS on all machines or none at all, and who did not make their own product for the OS to run on, WON their case in the USA... they only lost in the EU.

Also, virtually EVERY cell phone made, including every single one before there was a such thing as a mobile app store (including every version of Windows mobile proior to 6), only had one browser.... Most still do. ALL of those are closed development environments requiring MUCH stricter standards, higher entry fees, custom hardware or proprietary compilers, and more that Apple does NOT enforce.

Yo9u want to sue apple, but you leave out Nintendo, XBox, Playstation, Verizon, HTC, Sprint, tivo, and more, sure, they get a pass even though their policies are MORE restrictive.

Apple does not have a monopoly on the iPhone platform, there SI no iPhone platform, it;s a PRODUCT, not a market. Smartphones are a MARKET, and apple has but 10%, and there's THRIVING competition (in fact, it could very, very easily be argued Apples actions have actually EMBOLDENED and STRENGTHENED competition.... Where would Andriod be if apple was not so closed?

[citation][nom]nottheking[/nom]...All told, I'd like to see where this goes. If we're lucky, the courts will order a split in Apple, forcing them to spin-off their Ap Store company, in a move that would yield far better openness for iAps; then everyone who owns a smartphone, smart MP3 player, or slate PC wins, INCLUDING owners of Apple's products...[/citation]
I'd love to see this happen, and I too think it'd be a good thing for the consumer.
