[citation][nom]cknobman[/nom]Sorry but if you loose money then you cant use that as a calculation in determining total profit. The fact that you LOST MONEY means you have no profit and therefore are not used in calculating PROFIT.[/citation]

4 DIFFERENT companies will be treated as separate entities.
You are not an accountant, are ya 🙂
Google "Dutch Sandwich" for some details. That's how GE, Romney, Apple, Microsoft etc. get their income taxes down.

Too many posters are intellectually challenged and/or plain ignorant.

Total industry profits MUST included those with losses, otherwise the total is meaningless. It just so happen that we call a negative profit a loss, but it is still part of total industry profits.

I guess some of you would argue that if profitable firms made a billion and unprofitable firms lost 2 billion, you would argue that total industry profits were 1 billion, since you do not count losses.

Patently ridiculous

And I AM an accountant (retired)

[citation][nom]rebturtle[/nom]106% = Math fail[/citation]
Wall Street math is not the same as scientific (AKA real) math. Just wait until next quarter when Apple and Samsung are said to be dying because they didn't snap up 107% of the industry's profits.

106%

blame canada!

now does the rest of the world see why we americans like to tease canadians?
silly socialist, math only works for capitalism, it just requires a decline in population or demand to prove it as socialist/communist math fails when ever the pyramid crumbles.

[citation][nom]freggo[/nom]Nope.4 companies profits...a $120b $80c -$20 ( a loss)d -$30 ( also a loss)Total profit of the 4 companies = $150 ( 120 + 80 minus the $50 losses)A therefore has 80% of the total profits ($120 of $150)B has 53% of the profits ( $80 of $150)So A and B combined generated 133% of the total profits in this example.See, it works 🙂[/citation]

A +$120=profit
B +$80=profit
C -$20= loss
D -$30= loss
sum of all profits $200= 100%
all profits=100% / $200 =.5% = $1

meaning $200 does not = 200%

don't do drugs, stay in school

classifying expenses and losses as profits is your fail (losses=when you have to pay to get rid of something as opposed to make money selling it the difference between sending something to a garbage dump or selling to a scrapper for material recollection or at a flea market for a discounted % of the original price.)

A $120
+
B $80
+
C -$20
+
D -$30
__________
$150=100%

100% / $150= .666666666666666666666666666666667=$1
meaning $159=106%

see the math fail now?

[citation][nom]ronch79[/nom]I'm not accepting the explanation that the reason why it's 106% is because of other companies' losses. 100% makes up the profits of all earnings, not counting losses, that's why we say 'earnings'. There's no way you could put other companies' losses on top of Samsung's and Apple's earnings and call it 106%.[/citation]

Well, if you calculate profit for the cellphone industry by adding up everyone's profit, then those who have negative profit would subtract from the total.

For example, say there are 3 companies: 1 earns 50 million, one earns 100 million, and one loses 25 million. You could say that net profit for the industry is 50 + 100 - 25 = 125 million.

If you remove the company with the loss from the equation, the other two have profits exceeding 100% of the total, because 150 million is more than 125 million.

[citation][nom]Azimuth01[/nom]Samsung is just baiting Apple into a false scene of security. Just when Apple thinks things are going great, Samsung will stop selling Apple their displays. There's 4 suppliers in the world of flat screen panels? And 2 of them suck so bad that the screens are only found in Chinese rip offs....the other two are Samsung and Sharp.Good luck getting a retina display from Sharp.....[/citation]
Do you mean the output volume or quality of display from Sharp not reaching the demand?
I don't worry about the quality of the LCD panel from Sharp. Retina display? They had retina display in their phone before Apple did.
But, I am not sure their output capacity.
