[citation][nom]ohim[/nom]Seriously ? you have to overpay even a stupid simple cable ? I`m still amazed why in the hell are people still supporting Apple ...Ok i get it, you like the product is nice shiny etc .. but look around it how closed it is .. starting from the OS and ending to a stupid cable .. you get very nice stuff from it`s competition very easy ... and you can even charge your phone with a simple USB cable to any USB port around ...[/citation]

Agreed. If you've never owned an android or you are just simply a yuppie then you'd never get this 😉

personally I hope it bites apple in the rear eventually ... you lock out third party and make everything apple exclusive, sounds like a bad idea to me ... people like variety and choice, as well as less expensive addons ... but, what else would you expect from an arrogant company like apple??

I doubt this will stop the true innovators in China fighting to provide us all with cheap alternatives to Apple's so called "genuine" products 😛

Wasn't there a law in the UE that sad something about ALL cellphone must have a micro-usb (or something around usb) connector? Ban Crapple from the market....

I know the founder and owner of Double Helix Cables, and he says he doesn't think it is an authentication chip, however it may work as one since although it has another purpose, others may not be able to copy it effectively, at least initially. He said it's true purpose is probably managing USB power, not USB data.

He said the interesting thing is that the cable is not truly reversible from the cable's perspective, but the iPhone reinterprets the cable based on orientation to assign the pins for the USB data.

The reality is apple has more money than brains and they have a hell of a lot of brains. About all anyone can do is just scoff at apple, they really are an corrupt evil corporation, but until people stop buying apple products they will continue to exist. And with so many people buying into the idea that apples are a status symbol and an elite club to belong to the fan boy base will continue to but their stuff, and they will continue to make money hand over fist. apple will never lead their lemming fan base to the edge of the cliff and they will never just go off the cliff by themselves.

[citation][nom]putdownthefudmorons[/nom]FFS, put down the bucket of FUD. See here for an discussion of what's going on in the cable:http://appleinsider.com/articles/1 [...] rsible_use[/citation]
bullshit dude.. you are either not computer related or very naive...
Network switches even the 8 dollars one are able to Detect and reassign pin on the cable for data transfer or POE and they don't require a chip on the cable. Just accept it how it is, Drop your pants, Bend over and await your price for being loyal to apple..

and advice. bring some baseline or Lube because apple got a big greedy one. 😛

I heard they got around this by having an adapter. I don't know if the adapter is a cable or something that fits on the bottom of the phone and adds weight and dimension to it.

[citation][nom]southernshark[/nom]Try a Sandisk next time, not much bigger, but with a hella lot more memory (16gb on board and with a micro SD slot) and it has better controls.[/citation]

But then you woudnt be locked into the iTunes ecosystem!!! *gasp*

apple has officially begun their downward spiral. steve jobs was maniacally obsessed with perfection in every detail of every product and full integration of apple products. he criticized the fragmentation of windows and windows computers, then later droid and droid devices. the iphone 5 is now fragmented from the other apple products, the aluminum back is easily scratchable and some even come scratched out of the box, and the new apple maps is shoddy. steve is rolling in his grave and apple has become just another tech company. if i were an apple customer, i wouldn't buy any new products from here on out.

[citation][nom]busuan[/nom]Does anyone know exactly what the chip does? Please don't shoot then aim.[/citation]
The most reasonable analysis for the chip purpose of the chip appears to be because the connector is direction-agnostic, and the chip functions to adjust the electrical paths through the correct pins dynamically depending on which way the connector is connected to the device: http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/25/apples_lightning_port_dynamically_assigns_pins_to_allow_for_reversible_use

I don't like Apple, but I'll be honest--not having to fiddle with which direction the cable is oriented when I connect it to a device is a great idea, but it requires circuitry to accomplish the dynamic switching--which is the reason for the chip. Also to force you to get the cable through them...but it doesn't appear to be solely for that purpose. That being said, I have no interest in owning an iphone of any variety...but I'm sure in no time "legit functioning" knockoffs will be available.

I'm not defending the cost of the cable, but network switches are huge devices, and they do the switching. Not the cable. Unless every computer USB port is configured with the switching microcircuitry required for the dynamic reassignment, you need it elsewhere--i.e., in the cable (since the phone's pin assignments are static).

Let me repeat from my earlier post, I know Pete, the owner and founder of Double Helix Cables, and I talked to him about this today. He says that there is nothing in the chip to handle the assignment of the pins of USB data. He said it is related to the power management of USB power.

According to the guy who originally tore it apart, it is the iPhone 5 itself that performs the dynamic pin reassignment.

Wait a minute, I don't get it. So you are telling me a chip can say; hey these are not "Apple" wires these are Chinese or Korean, or Mexican wires! No way I am going to work now. Please people, they aren't making these at "Apple" head quarters. They make them in China already. Ever think it may be used to filter the power or signal. I really can't believe people believe all this crap. Everything on the internet is not true. Over the years I have owned several cell phones. I have a shoebox full of cables that don't work with my current phone. Why? Because they want you to buy a new one. Why all the cry babies who act like it is only Apple that does this. If if you don't use Apple products then why post unless you are jealous or something. I don't own and have never owned a single Apple product. I personally don't care what they do with their connectors and chips. Neither should you if you are an Apple hater. Please move own.

have you seem an 8 dollars switch.. or for the matter those 5 port switch!!. "5" port they are shorter in length than an iPhone 5, second they are not huge device, they are very small and fit in your pocket and they are able to do pin reassignment. The point of my post was to put an example that the reassignment don't need to be done on the cable but the device and as somebody else specified quoting an article it does get done in the device which is the smart way what left as obvious that this chip does not server any cable data or power management capabilities, it is just there to make sure that you paid 30$ or more for the cable at apple store and not 5$ at a Asian knock off place
