applying thermal paste?

do u apply on the just the cpu? a spreaded thin layer... or do u apply on heatsink too? and how do u get wax off or a thermal pad? im getting new comp (2500+) on weekend, wanna be prepared before i start applying grease and start overclocking, so do i cover whole die? or not? and will alcohol swabs get the crap off that might already be there?
