Are all of the SATA's backwards compatible?

The answer to your question is yes. However, if you install a SATA 3 6Gb/s ssd in a system that only supports SATA 2 3Gb/s ssd's, then the ssd performance will be limited to SATA 2 3Gb/s levels. In ordinary everyday use you probably will not notice the difference. More than likely you would have to run a synthetic benchmark to measure the difference in performance.
