Are my hard drives dying?

Recently a couple of videos in both my laptop's hard drive and my external hard drive started turning into 0 byte that cannot be rendered, so far it hasn't been a lot of files but so far they have only been videos, i'm pretty sure it started quite a while ago because there have been a couple of times where i checked the disk with window's disk check and got error that supposedly got automatically fixed. I posted a similar question before but was asking for how to find the 0 bytes files and found more of them but still not a huge amount yet, at least so far, now i would like to know if there's a way to know if its a sign that my drives are dying or a completely different issue.

My laptop's is a MSI ge70 2PE apache pro, not exactly sure about the hard disk model, it came with the laptop and i don't know how to check for brand and model, i can post serial number if needed or if its helpful or if someone can tell me how to check i will. The external hard disk is a Western Digital My Book 4tb Home Edition.

I tested them using window's check disk, with crystal disk info, western digital's diagnostics and the software that comes with the external hard drive, and both the laptop's drives and the external one are all say its good(S.M.A.R.T). If i had to guess i would say those 0 byte files are a result of a couple of times were i checked the disk and came out with error and supposedly fixed them(probably not transfer issue in the case of the laptop disk since I usually download stuff directly there then transfer to the external but might be a transfer issue for the external drive or it could be a power issue since I got a lot of sudden blackouts and low voltage lately) but i don't know enough to tell for sure. If someone can tell me what else should i look for or check please do tell me. I also read somewhere that it might be malware but i ran malwarebytes and AVG antivirus and couldn't find anything.

I might end up buying a new external hard drive to back things up just in case but still i would love to know for sure if they really are dying so that i can hurry up and salvage their contents before its too late(kind of short on money lately too so if i can know for sure if they are fine or not i kind save some but the contents of the disks are important to me so will buy new one for back up if there's no sure answer), my gut tells me that its unlikely that both the laptop's drive and the external are dying at the same time and they both only got around 2 years of life.

Also i haven't cleaned my laptop or the external drive(never done it before so not confident enough) in the 2 years i have own them but temperatures aren't all that high(not really sure because i have been asking around about temperatures and get mixed answers), around 30 to 38 degrees celsius for the laptop disk and between 30 to 43 for the external hard disk, no physical damage that i know of either. About the external hard drive i'm not sure how many hours of life it has but i have been using it as an extension so i have been using it mostly with sleep mode turned off for the most part so that might be a reason i guess.

I'm not really a computer expert and have really limited knowledge so i would really appreciate details too, thanks in advance.

Solution
Copy out your data from the drive to a backup, get a utility from the drive vendor, run that to check for errors. If there are none, do a full format on the drive to clean up the file system. Copy your files back to it.
