Are older GPU models still good for modern games?

So, recently I did some brainstorming on a PC build, and I thought "why is everyone spending so much money on the latest and greatest GPUs?". I mean, older NVIDIA models like the GTX 600 series (okay, not that old, but relatively) seem to be popular among my friends, and I just wanna know if people out there recommend downgrading to an older model. Like, I know the 9xx series have more CUDA cores, higher clock speeds, etc, and the R9 series are full of raw VRAM power, but does that make a huge difference for the average gamer? Couldn't you just buy like a GT 730 and call it a day? I'd love some feedback here, guys!

you are barking up the wrong tree

you need to be looking at fps comparisons in the games you want to play at the settings you want to play under

some older gpu's hold up well, most dont

people buy the latest and greatest so they dont need to worry about it for years

A GT 730 is marginally better than the integrated GPU on Intel and AMD CPUs.

If you went with the older GPU series, then you'd have to go with the top end of the old generation (e.g. GTX 690, HD 7990) to to the performance of the current generation of GPUs.

Also, it depends on the game you're playing. If you plan to play CS:GO forever then you don't need anything beyond a GTX 750ti. If you plan to play the latest and greatest, you'll be having a hard time with a mid-range GPU from 2-3 generations ago.

Silky smooth 30 FPS! @ 900p!

B-b-b-but, I enjoy my glorious 30 fps ;~;, still my point is that GT 730 is pretty good for handling such games with nice FPS at 900p resolution., the GPU is for "average" gamers who don't have a lot of time and value performance over graphics

Also because graphics card are way overpriced in my country so I'm stuck with a GT 730 till next summer ;~;
