I've been a gamer all my life, I started out with consoles, my first was an Atari 2600, back in like, 1984.
There is a reason I'm a PC gamer today, despite having used many consoles over the years, and that reason is simple, the PC is superior.
It's not one thing that makes it better, it's a vast list of things, I'll try to explain, but, there are so many good things about the PC, that it's hard to cover them all in a reasonably sized posting. (So forgive the frantic pacing of the rest of this post.)
I do EVERYTHING on my PC, it's my TV, my internet, my gaming system, my stereo system, my recording studio, etc, etc,.
Modern consoles can do SOME of this, but, only hacked consoles can really compete, and that point, it's just a PC with fixed hardware, thus, the point is moot. (Trust me, I have numerous hacked consoles.)
Think about this: I own an Atari, NES, SNES, N64, PSX, PS2, Wii, etc,. (I have nearly 20 consoles in total.)
That's a LOT of consoles, it's a small army, my PC replace them all, and takes up much less space, it's also replacing DVD players, cable boxes, stereo equipment, etc,. (ie, my entertainment area would explode if I tried to have all these devices hooked up, you'd be tripping over equipment, a single PC tower replaces them all.)
You young folks probably only own 1-2 consoles, but, once you get nearly twenty of them, you'll start to see the appeal of owning a system capable of replacing them all.
Digitized content is another plus, on top of saving space with hardware, you can save space on things like DVD's\CD's. You can have your entire music\movie collection stored on a hard drive, my entertainment center looks barren, yet, offers more content than you can imagine.
(The physical content of what my PC replaces, fills a real life 5x10 storage unit, my PC takes up the space of a standard mid-tower, do the math.)
People complain about the cost of PC's, but, subjectively, it's much cheaper, I spent an initial $400 on my original PC, I've been upgrading since. In general I spend no more than $300 on parts every 3-5 years, which is far cheaper than most new consoles.
I've spent less than a $1,000 to keep my system current for about 10 years, compared to a PS3 which cost nearly that much new, and was outdated in half the time. Using XBox prices you'd break even, but, you still get less for the money, remember, my PC replaced TONS of other stuff, not just consoles. (And if you own a PC and consoles, well, you just lost the price war.)
I could go on, and on, but, the short version is, I've owned consoles, I've been on that path, it leads to owning a PC, and loving it.
One day, when you find yourself surrounded by electronics, and peripherals, etc, and wishing you had some magical device that could hold all that content in one compact unit, you'll be glad to know, the PC is waiting with open arms for you to embrace it.
