Unions are great in theory and overall they do benefit our workforce. There are some unions that do hurt the general public though. The California Teachers Association is ruining education here in California along with our legislation who are slaves to the unions. Here are some facts- http://teacherunionexposed.com/state.cfm?state=CA

Unions here make it almost impossible to fire a teacher. There are literally rooms full of teachers receiving full pay and benefits for doing nothing because the schools could not fire them due to tenure. To fire a teacher it takes years of work and huge amounts of money for legal fees.

Also we have one of the most expensive educational system in the US not because we spend the most on pupils but the most on teachers. Teachers paychecks and their defined benefit pension plans account for 80% of the educational spending so when teachers here say "we need more funding because it's all for the children" it really means "we need more funding because it is 80% for us and 20% for the children".

Yes overall Unions are good, but many are harmful like the CA Teachers Association.
