ARRIS CABLE MODEM connected to 2Wire 1701HG, PLEASE HELP!

can anyone help me set up an ARRIS cable modem (also a wireless router) to a 2Wire 1701HG Gateway? I DO NOT recieve wireless signal in my room downstairs so I'm hoping to use the 2Wire as a form of wireless signal extender using an ethernet cable to connect the two. I read somewhere online that this is possible however i dont know how to set up the 2wire settings in general. please help! or atleast tell me if this isnt possible.

log into the 2wire

setup the wireless security using WPA2

disable DHCP and change the LAN IP to match the Gateway IP but ending in 253.

connect one of the four LAN ports to your main router

Ok, so I know how to log on to 2wire to fix settings and all that. However, I couldn't find even half of what u just told me to do...I consider myself to be technologically adept but please elaborate more. What tab do I go to set up wireless security? Apparently there's only WEP-open and WEP-shared and then WPA-PSK. There's no WPA2. Theres no tab or option to disable DHCP (unless it's somewhere I can't see) and how do I change the LAN ip? Where do I go to even do that? Where is my gateway ip address to even match? Please elaborate!

sorry I don't have one to look at and I have not found the manual.

stay with the WEP mode since it is more secure than WPA-PSK

usually the DHCP setting is in the same area then the LAN IP which is the one you use to log into the 2wire
