Question Arris Router BGW210 won't connect to secure websites on AT&T U-Verse

Hello, so I just got a new router, Arris model BGW210-700 w/AT&T Uverse. Initially, it seemed like everything was working fine, but then I found that my desktop PC wouldn't load the router config page, Reddit or eBay (tried both Chrome and Firefox). So it's not loading any "secure" sites where the URL starts with "https". These sites load fine on my laptop PC, phone and ipad when connected to the Wifi.

On Firefox it says
"Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.
We can’t connect to the server at www.ebay.com."

On Chrome it says "This site can’t be reached www.ebay.com’s DNS address could not be found. Diagnosing the problem."

Also, When I connect my desktop PC using my neighbor's Wifi, it loads all secure sites fine (He also has ATT U-Verse w/the exact same router). I tried searching on a few other forums with no luck. I tried asking on another sub and here's the suggestions I tried.

Disabling the windows firewall, clearing the browser cache/history, resetting the router, restarting DNS client, flush DNS and renewing IP.

When I typed in the telnet ebay.com 443 command it responded "Connecting To ebay.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 443: Connect failed"

When I tried the nslookup command, it responded with "UnKnown can't find ebay.com: No response from server"
It doesn't respond to ping 8.8.8.8 It says "general failure"

With tracert 8.8.8.8 it says
"Tracing route to dns.google [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 Transmit error: code 1231.
Trace complete."

I tried turning off IPv6 in the Control panel

I tried turning off Secure DNS in the browser settings.

I tried turning all the advanced firewall setting on the router to off.

Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Compare the configuration settings between a working (https) computer and and the non-working (no https or only http) desktop PC.

Or when working on your neighbor's wifi network and not working on your network wifi.

Hello, yep that's my router. Thanks for the reply, I tried downloading the securly SSL certificate and following the install instructions, but I still can't connect to any secure sites.

I would search for
Transmit error: code 1231

There are a number of sites with instructions on things to try. I am not a windows guy so I am unsure why these might fix it.

Generally when you ping by IP address and it fails it some driver issue, but it seams that code means something else.

It can not be dns because you are using a numeric IP and if if the ip setting were wrong you tend to get other errors.

Were you able to compare settings between the Desktop PC that is not connecting to https websites and the settings on another computer, such as your laptop that does connect?

Another way to look at it all may be to apply some Powershell Get cmdlets regarding the network adapters, etc.

For example:

Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration -Filter IPEnabled=TRUE -ComputerName . | Select-Object -Property [a-z]* -ExcludeProperty IPX,WINS

Reference:

Per the link "This command will return detailed information about DHCP, DNS, routing, and other minor IP configuration properties. "

However, I believe that the problem is certificate related.

So if you can make comparisons then the problem may become apparent.

Find some difference first. Then the next step will be to apply the necessary fix.

Thanks for your reply. I tried searching for Error code 1231, and following the recommended fixes like changing my computer name and reinstalling the network adapter. Nothing helped unfortunately. B/c I only have this issue when connecting to my new router, and not other routers (or my old one), it makes me think it's not an issue with the setting on my computer.

Hello and thanks for your reply. I wasn't able to find anything different in the settings of the laptop, but I didn't really know what I was looking for? As a side note, my neighbor just got new internet service, and my desktop is able to connect to all websites through his new ISP, as well as his old router, and my old router. It's only my new router that is giving my computer any problems. At first, I thought it was all secure HTTPS that it wouldn't connect to, but now I see it's only certain websites, like eBay and Reddit for example, whereas on other secure sites it will connect fine.

Two things:

1.) hosts file

Check the hosts file. Not really expecting anything amiss but no harm in checking.

Look for blocked websites.

2.) New Router

Do a factory reset on the new router and take the router back to factory settings.

For more information, click the router link in Post #2. Instructions are on physically numbered Page 24.

Do be aware though that, from the manual:

"Warning: Resetting the BGW210-700 Broadband Gateway to factory defaults will
require all configured settings to be reconfigured. "

Basically starting over with the router's configuration settings and hopefully clear out some error of omission or commission.

Write down the settings before the reset and make notes as you go forward with the reconfiguration.

Reconfigure using your browser to access the router via its' default IP address, user name, and password.
