I have XP Pro and I am trying to create a ASR backup.

When I run the Backup wizard for ASR it appears to be
backuping up the whole disk. How big is the ARS backup
file and what is it backing up? Everything I read
indicates that the ASR backup is only the systems files
needed, but it appears to be backing up the whole disk.

It backs up the WHOLE of the C: drive, and will only work correctly if you
have another drive or partition on which the backup file is created. When
used to restore, ASR will format the c:\ drive, retrieve the backup file and
recreate the C: drive. It is therefore NOT suitable if you run a single hard
drive with a single partition.

It is a LIFESAVER if you run multiple hard drives or multiple partitions
and install every program with custom options and use a drive other than C:
as their target. Only Windows, its Registry and Common Files are installed
on the C:\drive.

You are much better off with one of the third party programs that create
images. Most will do so with compression. Over the years I've used several
including Norton Ghost, Powerquest Drive Image, terabytesunlimited's Image
and finally I've settled on Acronis TrueImage.
