I have an Asus AC66R Wireless router. It has 2 USB ports for sharing data on external hard drives.

I have a Seagate Free Agent (1TB) external hard drive. The router detects it, and it works fine. I have a Western digital (750GB) external hard drive, and the router will not detect it.

Both hard drives work fine with my Windows PC and a Mac. Both hard drives are powered by the router. They both light up and make spinning noises.

I've tried all permutations of USB cable and USB port.

Any ideas why the router will work with one USB external hard drive, but not the other?

Hey there, JohnCarlo!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your WD My Passport external drive not being properly recognized by the router. 🙁
I'd recommend you to go to our website and check if you have the latest firmware update for the external HDD. I'd also try re-installing the SES driver as well. Here's a link to all the available downloads for your model: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=N0Xfwf

Once you've updated the firmware, try plugging the external to the router again and see if that will make a difference. Since the WD My Passport is recognized by your computers, I'd also recommend you to test it using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tool on the Windows PC. Here's a link to the software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=R5FZun
It will help us determine what exactly is the health and SMART status of the HDD.

Keep me posted with the results! Hope this helps though! :)
