Question Asus B450m-A II PCIE Running at 8x instead of 16x - Please Help

Hi Everyone

So i built a system last week for a friend. The spec is As Follows

Ryzen 5700X
Asus Prime B450m A II
32GB 3200MHZ Ram DDR4
Crucial PCIE 3 M2
Asus RX7600 Dual EVO OC

Its running like a champ, but the issue i have is rather technical - According to both CPUZ and GPUZ, the RX7600 is running as PCI-E 8X as opposed to 16.

I have spent a few hours researching this, and have seen that i am not alone with this issue - that said i have yet to find a confirmed cause for it, nor a solution

  • Iv seen some confusion about the M2 slot taking up some of the PCIE Lanes - this is entirely contrary to what asus have said. They claim that the M2 slot shares system resources with SATA 5 & 6 - As i do not have any SATA drives in this system, im fairly certain this cannot be the cause
  • I have updated the bios to latest version, and this has not fixed the issue -
Im quite confused by this issue, as i cannot seem to find anything that i have done wrong - If anyone can offer guidance i would REALLY APPRECIATE IT - Thanks in advance

RAM = 2 x 16GB , 4 X 8GB....?

Another thing to check:

Some motherboards require that the first physically installed RAM be placed in a specific slot - typically DIMM_A2.

That requirement is not always clearly mentioned or shown.

Double check the motherboard's User Guide/Manual to verify that the installed RAM is supported, correctly and fully slotted, and configured properly.

Read carefully and pay attention to all fine prints, warnings, and notes to look for online updates.

OH WOW - I DID NOT REALIZE THAT! The 7600 is 8x? Crazy stuff -

I suspect it hardly matters tbh - I built this for a friend who is on a tight budget and in europe the 7600 seems to be the best Power v price trade off

  • Cheaper than the 3060 in both 8GB and 12GB format - and when i say cheaper i mean quite a bit cheaper
  • Seems faster than the 3060 in every review iv read
Id imagine my friend will require some explanation on this though - We picked the card together, in order to meet the best Bang we could on the budget - Saved nearly 60 euro going for the seemingly faster 7600 over the 3060 8GB and saved a bit more VERSUS the 12GB (he has no interest in going beyond 1080P and my own opinion was that the extra VRAM in the 12 would really only kick in with games over 1080 - the 7600 was the same price as an 8GB 3050 which seemed to indicate that it was the bargain!

Guys for my first post on Toms, im eating a lot of humble pie - to a serious degree - thanks for the prompt reply though, and id be interested in your thoughts - i think im right in saying we still made the right choice considering european prices!?

Im sitting in dublin, shaking my head, and rather embarassed - i never even thought to look at the Card, and was digging deep into b450 forum threads😆🙄

@Ralston18

Its in 2 x 16GB G-SKILL - Again in spec-ing this up for him, i tried to maximize the budget - My mate wont be over clocking this at all, but 3200MHZ ram (had to manually tell the bios this of course) is fine for him, and adds some punch
the 5700X is a godess - im running my 3600 with some manual overclocking, and its fine, but the extra two cores are fantastic - i might upgrade

@rgd1101

Really cant thank you enough for the prompt reply - iv been putting systems together for years, and have encountered more pitfalls than i can count - RGB controller curses, Memory in the wrong slots for dual channel-ing - etc etc - iv always trouble-shooted these things myself - but this is really the first time that i feel genuinely embarassed - Have to hand it to you though, the prompt reply was fitting - when i finish banging my head against the desk (and apologising to the asus board, which i was cursing into the pit of deplorable tech), il read that review - like i said, i still think its a great card - just surprised is all
