I didn't notice a mention that the LCD screen runs at 120Hz! This gives you Full Resolution REAL 3-D Gaming (and Movies) with Nvidia's 3-D Vision system using LCD Shutter Glasses?

No other laptop is capable of that at this time!

Once you play games in "REAL" 3-D with glasses you'll never go back. I can't beleive that nobody is commenting on this as I think that is the most "advanced" feature of this system.

".....the other systems were only tested at the settings shown in the charts, we again tried dropping the G51J to 720p and were rewarded this time with a smoother 40 FPS average."

So maybe I'm a little noobish, but isn't 1280x1024 less than 720p resolution? If so, the quote says they got the fps to 40 when the graph says 36 @ 1280x1024. What gives? Am I missing something??

Yes, you're missing something. 1280x1024 is more pixels than 1280x720. Sorry.

Woah, now that I realize how stupid the question that I asked was, I feel, well, pretty stupid. Thanks for shining the light on my idiocy 🙂 (Though isn't true 720p 1366x768?

LOL, if 720p were 1366x768 it would be called 768p. The reason so many TV's are 1366x768 is because they have built-in overscan area, which is really, really stupid since 720p is digital and wouldn't have required the overscan area of analog TV. Instead of getting a perfect 1:1 mapping of the digital signal, your TV receives 720p and UPSCALES it to fill a 1366x768 screen.

So, don't feel bad, the people who added overscan area to digital television are even more stupid!

Master Crashman, you are wise beyond your years. Seriously, that's really cool to know and I appreciate you catering to my noobishness. So basically, the industry standard for padding the viewing panel for overscan worked its way into digital TV due to ease of transfer.... I work in the med device industry so I know all about that....

This thread is fantastic. I am looking to purchase a custom ASUS G51J and need the 9 cell battery, processor upgrade and SSD. Can anyone recommend a retailer in the USA? I have been looking on www.agearnotebooks.com but they only offer the 6 cell battery in the custom list. Thanks a lot in advance, Josea

I forgot to mention, you get both batteries, so it's not really an upgrade. You're just purchasing an additional battery. But that way you don't have to worry about extra shipping.

Hi,

I purchased this notebook a few months ago.
No complaints on the performance.. however the screen is the worst i've seen. No matter how u adjust the viewing angle the brightness is not uniform... there is a huge difference in terms of brightness between different parts of the screen.. I havent meter it yet.. but like more than 1.5 stop difference in photography terms. We're not talking abt corners or sides.. its like 1/3 of the whole screen. It might be ok if one is only working with speadsheets.. but for color/photoshop type work.. its useless.. Try watching DVDs, u'll see what i mean. Sent it in to Asus, thinking it might just be the screen on my unit that need to be replace.. but Asus claims everything is in fine!
