Hi Gang

tough one this

Brief outline for you guys - bought a CPU Intel i3 Haswell 1150 ,Corsair XMS (is it??) Ram 8GB (2x4GB) 1333mhz and an ASUS board just before christmas to set up for my Uncle - everything arrived but it would not POST... called scan who I bought it from and they told me that the board accepted said CPU but required a BIOS update (why didnt it say that on the website doh!!)... to save time mucking about I bought a second board ASUS H8m1-Plus and paid scan to update the bios for us in advance... still no POST so after some trial and error I discovered that when the RAM is in slot A & B it will not POST, when the RAM is in slot A single - it will not POST, when the RAM is in slot B however it boots fine and detects 4gb on both sticks if you insert them individually - could this be a faulty slot on the board ? CPU error on the RAM controller side or faulty RAM?? seems unlikely to be the RAM as it works fine on its own in slot B... it seems very unlucky to get a board with a faulty slot as I haven't had one before. To test I also had access for a day to two sticks of Hyper 1600mhz Kinston DDR3 and again got the same result with that RAM which works fine in an alternate machine. It is almost as if the RAM works fine in single mode (at least in slot B anyway) but refuses to work in dual mode or single in slot A - confusing to say the least.

If I stick in the 4gb stick into slot B it posts and works fine all day long but A or dual and no dice!!

Solution

If RMA-ing the board, try testing it firstly outside the case. If still the same, remove the CPU and check the socket for bent pins. Faulty CPU/CPU cooler installation can damage the pins.
second board as well - dang unlucky :S
I assume if it were CPU at fault it wouldn't POST at all or both slots would work individually.
thats crazy unlucky isn't it - dammit lol - thanks for the reply though

no it wouldnt post at all if it were a faulty CPU.... i thought you said that slot B worked..
YW :)
and yes it is INSANLEY unlucky.. im sorry it happened.. you chould contant the people you bought it from. see if there is anything they could do

yes the board is under warrenty - its only about a week old.
drat unlucky though lol
hey thanks for your help man - I thought it may be the case but after a while out of the game - my last build was an Athlon 64 - I thought Id check first :S
