I'm trying to test a samsung 950 pro that I took out of my laptop because randomly my laptop froze, and after restarting it would freeze sooner and sooner until it was freezing at the homescreen after booting. Program manager said it was running at 100% load when it happened.

To cut to the chase, I'm installing this SSD into my desktop using the ASUS Hyper m.2 x4 Mini that came with my mobo. I can't seem to get it to be recognized anywhere on my system, wondering if there are any BIOS settings I need to change to allow it to be recognized through the pcie card adapter?

I'm trying to find out if this SSD is dead so I can contact samsung.

Specs:
Mobo: Asus Z170-Deluxe
CPU: Intel i7 6700k
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2400, 32Gb
Windows 10 pro

The laptop that it came out of was an MSI GS60 6QE Ghost Pro 4k.

I'm not 100% sure when using the adapter. Your board has a native m.2 slot though... have you tried with it installed there*?

Supports PCIe and SATA, so no issues there. Likely all you would need to change in the BIOS would be under "onboard device configuration" (I believe) and ensure the m.2 slot is enabled & set to PCIe x4

Actually, try enabling the same settings (under "onboard device config") while it's attached to the add-in card...

*I'm not sure why your board would come bundled with a Hyper m.2 mini, when the board has an m.2 slot itself, that supports PCIe and SATA...

My desktop has the same SSD with the OS installed to it through the m.2 slot. I figured if I could run the suspect 950 pro through the pcie expansion slot I could hopefully back it up, or confirm its working or dead.

I will try to just put it in the m.2 slot to see if the computer will even recognize it at all with a Windows installation usb.

Seems a pretty simple test that way, like-for-like, since your current 950pro is recognized just fine.

If your current 950 Pro is recognized in the BIOS via the onboard m.2 slot, and the potentially faulty one is not, there's a good chance there's a problem with the other 950pro.

Doesn't help necessarily, as if it's not recognized then it'll be somewhere between extremely difficult & impossible to back up - but at least you'll be able to confirm the issue lays with the drive itself and not elsewhere.

Is there anything you specifically need to save from the laptop 950? If not, you could always attempt to format via diskpart (with a Windows install prompt screen) and see how it responds from there.

Fingers crossed it's recognized in the onboard m.2 slot...

Wasn't recognized. I tried to reformat and do a clean install of windows 10, the drive didn't show up, but it gave me the option to repair, and there it said the drive was locked. Under another option it said the drive was missing a partition. I'm not sure if those are just standard responses when you attempt those solutions when there isn't a working drive installed.

I was pretty good about backing up things, so it's not completely lost, just frustrating.

It seems this drive is dead. Which is strange because it's 3 months old, so I'm going to contact samsung and see what they say.

Thanks for the replies on the BIOS help with the pcie expansion card!

It's just strange, after months of running fine, and no new applications installed for weeks, it started freezing, running 100% load and within 30 minutes was completely unbootable.
