I pressed F9 on my asus laptop, went into the win 7 recovery but it stops at 9% and automatically shuts down. Do I need the actual files recovery files? I heard you don't since it's preinstalled.

If it fails to install during a Reset, there is probably a hardware issue like a bad memory module or hard drive.
It's also possible that your recovery media is corrupted. Try the following method. Download and create media, using another computer, for use during installation:

This may require knowing your product key, and it may not. If you know it or it's printed somewhere, great. If not, it's highly possible that it's keyed to your bios already or if you registered your original installation using a Microsoft account, you can activate the installation during or after you install by using that method.

Actually, for OEM versions the digitalriver downloads no longer work using the OEM product keys but you can try here to see if yours will work. You need to know your product key though.
