My set up:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII HERO
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws (2x8GB) DDR3 SDRAM
PSU: CORSAIR HX850
Case: Thermaltake Core V71
CPU Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

I recently built this set up and had issues from the get-go. My PC would shut down on its own without warning. I thought it was an overheating issue, which is why I got the aftermarket CPU fan. But from my temp monitors, my CPU maxed at around 60c at 100% usage (about 30c on idle).

After the last unexpected shut down, my PC wouldn't turn back on anymore.

My troubleshooting:
I tested my PSU with a multimeter and gave good readings on all pins.
I removed my motherboard from my case, removed all components (RAM, GPU, HDDs) from my motherboard except for the CPU, and powered it on. It didn't pass POST, no audible beeps and didn't even give out a QR Code from the little display (blank display). The lights on my motherboard do light up.

Cleared the CMOS and tried again, same results.

Do I have a bad motherboard? And would a bad motherboard cause my PC to shut down unexpectedly?

Thanks for your help!

Heh this happened to me before and how I fixed it was quite interesting.

Somehow my 24 pin power cable for the mobo wont fit properly, so I had to force it in. The next day my computer won't turn on, so I went in pushed the 24 pin cable in and the computer started up.

Try pushing in the 24 pin cable into the mobo with a bit of force. I somehow just can't get it in properly, but this problem never occured to my friends who own the board.

If all esle fails RMA the board. Though it is unlikey for such a great board (yes the VII Hero) to fail like this. I just freaking love the Hero :)

Best of luck on getting it fixed.

I tried wiggling and forcing in the 24pin cable but that didn't work either. I also tried using a different PSU, but same results.

I guess I'll have to RMA the board. Thanks for the advice!
