Asus motherboard & Gigabyte graphics card compatibility?

So, I'm building my first computer and came across this "problem" of is a Gigabyte graphics card compatible with an Asus motherboard. I have been looking all over the interwebs but haven't found a reliable answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

yes. the only thing you need to worry about is the slot. but since this is probably a new motherboard and a new graphics card ( circa 2010-2013 ) you won't have any problems. ( pci-express )

Could I ask you a quick question while you are here? If one has a PCIe 3.0 x16 card, what is the oldest and slowest slot that will run it, such as a PCIe 2.0 x 4 slot?

Should be able to run even in the original PCI-E slots (ver 1 if you will), in the original version it won't perform to full speed, but you probably really won't notice, A PCI-E 3 card can't even max out the bandwidth available through PCI-E 2 - hope this helps.

Yes that does, Thank you for the info. The reason I asked is someone was wondering about a new card in a 2.0 x4 slot, I told him it would most likely work but did not know if the slot would allow the card to run at full speed. From what you are saying it is safe to tell someone a card such as a 770 will function the same in a 2.0 x4 slot the same as if it were in a 3.0 x16 slot, or very close anyway.

If found all the info on the slots specs but could not on what the cards actually need to run full out.

It'll run at X4 - thought you were asking about PCI-E X16 slots, which is where GPUs generally always go, sometimes if you get into SLI or XFire and add a second card into an X4 slot it will degrade performance

Sorry I was not very clear on my question, it was about an old MB with 2.0 x4 slots only, a single card in it. Don't want to waste your time on this as it's just a question I was wondering about.

Thanks for your help, I will try to look into it further to find out where the cut off point is on these new cards, like what they need to run full out, there must be some headroom in the 3.0 x16 slots for them, was just wondering where it was at. But as I say I will try to find it, Thank You for the help

I don't remember, it was a question here some time ago that got me wondering, a guy with an old board that needed a new card. At this point it is just an academic question.

To answer it we would need to know what the new cards need to run full out, what is the minimum bus they need to run full out. I would guess 3.0 x8 would do it because most all new MB use this for SLI. But that is only a guess....

I found a problem with asus strix board and gigabyte gpu if your running rgb. The asus strix aura program likes to battle with gigabyte aorus engine/rgb fusion for rgb colors including the ram colors. Im Going to try a gigabyte aorus mother board and see if it helps any. I figure it's probably best to get as much matching components as possible, especially if your going for rgb look.

Epic fails in rgb running programs and compatibily. Each brand needs it's own program to run lights (strix, corsair, thermaltake, nzxt, etc.. ) mix and match depending how many conflicting programs u want running in your back round. Lol its dumb
