Hello guys and gals, well as the title suggests iv recently purchased a 980TI Strix and straight from the get go iv been having problems with it shutting down the whole system. This only tends to happen when im playing games.
Im a complete noob when it comes to problem solving so ill post my specs below and see if you guys can see if anything stands out.

Case: Thermaltake Urban S21 Midi Gaming Case
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600mhz
PSU: Artic Blue 750W Blue Fan
Mobo: ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-4130 3.8Ghz Quad Core (will be upgrading soon)

Yea a 980Ti, especially one like the Strix, would kill most games. Even over my HD7970GHz.

Well I would check the CPU heatsink, make sure it is seated properly and didn't accidentally get knocked loose in the install.

Also make sure your rear fan is pulling air out of the case and if you have a fan up top that it is also pulling air out the top. Make sure front fans are pulling air into the case as well as any side fans are pulling air into the case.

These gpus get hot man. If I remember correct my stock bios had max TDP set at 300W and it's not hard to hit ceiling with this card so you end up with Twin Frozer dumping 300W worth of heat dumping in your case. I had somehow similar issue with my old gtx 970 before I switched to water it was heating up everything above (incl cpu and ram). Back then I fixed it with extra fans to create more flow. In your case stock cooler and possibly old thermal paste might make the issue bigger.

well ill double check the heatsink, probably reseat it. As for the fans i only have 2 stock fans that came with the case as my old fans from my oooold pc wouldnt fit and they are situated one in the front end and one in the rear with a setup of a direct air flow through the machine. I guess i can buy a third for a top fan as there is a slot for one.

@mp5mafia, they do get hot but hot enough to cause the CPU to hit 84c? that means the ambient air in there would have to be hitting over 84c (movement will lower the temperature from the GPU) to cause the CPU to hit that. I don;t think the GPU is causing this:

At max load the 980Ti Strix hits 78c and GTA V does not max out the GPU.

@GingerDeadMan, a top fan would not hurt to help pull the warm air out. As well install the Asus GPUTweak tool and you can set the fan curve for the GPU but I still don;t see how a GPU could cause it to heat up that much. That is a ton of extra heat it has to be producing.

I think you have your thinking a bit off here.
You don't need ambient temperature to be 84C for the cpu to heat that level.

Sorry I meant less for the ambient. Something like 30-50c (depends on the CPU) to make it hit that high and I still doubt the GPU is pushing that much heat out, especially in a game like GTA V that does not max a 980Ti out.

Believe me... It does pump a lot of heat.

Also please do not install another software you don't need to control gpu fan curve if the gpu is not overheating. It will just create even more load on cpu for no reason. Just saying

The gpu wasnt the problem, that was cool as anything..only hit around 40ish in game. seemed my heatsink got nudged during the install of the gpu. While the pc dosnt shut down i still think ill get a new heatsink and psu just to be safe...that card was a lot of money and i dont want to blow it.

Glad
You got it sorted.
On a side note your gpu runs cold coz the heatsink and fans doing their job as they should unfortunate for anything else in your case which needs to deal with more heat because of that.

Glad it was sorted. I still recommend the Corsair RM650x, it has gotten great reviews.

What cooler are you considering? The one thing I have never liked about AMDs boards is their mounting bracket. If a cooler uses it it will point the fan down towards the back of the GPU and pull air from there. Whatever cooler you get, make sure it can be pointed towards the front of the case to pull fresh cool air from there and towards the rear fan.

Thank you for all the advice, i have that PSU on my watch list so ill grab when i can. :)
