Hey all,

I've recently purchased a new processor for my system, after installing it properly and trying to turn on the computer.. I had problems
On the initial boot up I receieved a proper vid card POSt ( You know the Vid card info) and then a scrambled BIOS and POST ..
Waiting a moment the scrambling stayed and I tried to hardboot and recieved a blank screen.

A few system specs:

Asus p4c800-E Deluxe BIOS Revision: 1014
Processor: p4 1.70b
Vid Card: Asylum 5200 Geforce FX 256 MB AGP 8x
Ram: Kingston 512mb 2700
HD: WD 80g
-----------
New Processor: P4 2.80E (90nm)HT

After that problem I decided it could be a processor/BIOS problem and switched back to the 1.70b and my computer booted up ( it even detected a processor change)

If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Footnote: Asus website states BIOS revision 1014 should support 2.80E (90nm) HT
CPU / Since PCB / Since BIOS / Memo
P4-2.80E GHz(800 MHz FSB) (HT) (90nm) / ALL / 1014 /

You only have PC2700 ram. You need PC3200 ram to run your memory sync mode.

First option is too relaxe your memory timings to 3/4/4/7/8. Turn off turbo, or PAT , etc. Then try booting with the 2.8.

If that fails go into the bios and set ram to 320 and tinings to 2.5/3/3/7/8. and try again. If no boot up the voltage to the memory to 2.6-2.65 maybe even 2.7 volts and try again

Switch the sticks in the slots so that you are not running dual channel if all of the above fails.

Last option is to buy new memory rated at PC3500 or better.

I aint signing nothing!!!

In Reply I found a new error -- after enabling BIOS speech -- it told me

System Failed due to CPU overclocking --

However, I didnt even set the CPU clocking -- I just changed processors and it should pick it up itself. So I'm curious does anyone else think I should update my BIOS and try again?

Also tried booting up the comp with 2 Crucial 128 mb 3200 DDR in Dual Sync.. I havent found a way to change the dual channel/ single channel thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would seem to be having some problems detecting the multiplier. I'd see if you can change it in bios, should be set at 14 for the 2.8, or 17 for the 1.7. MIght put 1.7 in, boot up, and see if you can change it to 14

That asus speech reporter can be so agravating. It can be activated by a low 12 volt rail on your power supply, or any number of minor fluctuations. Some of those monitors can be disabled in the bios. I would go through each item in the bios one by one, and see what you can adjust. You might also try reseating the cpu.

Tried changing the multiplier and it wouldn't let me having the 1.70 in.

As for the Speech Reporter -- Using the 1.7 ghz processor and the Kingston 512 it gives me no errors or anything.

Didn't really think that was likely with fixed multipliers, only reason I could come up with for it thinking there was a cpu being overclocked though.

Not really sure. Might try contacting Asus. This is their top baord, they should be able to help you, especially with what they cost(that's why I have the P4P800 deluxe 😉 )

Alright well new update on my situation:

It turned out to be the BIOS REVISION 1014 wasn't supporting the processor ( even though it said it would) after an upgrade to revision 1016 I got it to start up..
Shortly after I got a post screen followed by rapid shutdown..

I assume that the shutdown is caused by over heating -- however I don't know what can be causing it or even a remedy for it.

I also noticed in the post screen it classified the processor as a 2.33Ghz and not 2.8ghz..

After trying again it didn't even get to a post screen before shutting down.

Any ideas on a remedy would be greatly appreciated.
