Asus P8Z68-v gen 3 needs to be reset to factory settings

Hey everyone, i tried looking around to find my problem but it seemed like everything i tried didnt work. I installed windows 7 on my computer and then my computer kept crashing, i then found out that it was due to a bad version of windows so i bought a new version and a solid state drive. Then only problem with that is windows 7 attaches to your motherboard and tries to find/read that, I removed the little battery for the BIOS and CMOS reset but it didnt work. So my question is how can i reset my motherboard completely to factory settings so i can reinstall windows 7 without any problems

To properly Clear CMOS the PSU MUST be unplugged for 5 minutes first, and then in your instance use the Clear CMOS 'Jumper' method ( page 2-20 of your manual ) ; see video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdHH9KrceR0

I've tried this, unfortunately it does not work either, im not sure if it's my motherboard or something else, whenever it tries to start up, it keeps putting me to windows boot manager saying windows failed to start. Tells me to insert your windows installation disk (which is in the rom) and follow the start up procedure, but the file that is missing is \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe status: 0xc0000098 but i dont have any software installed on this ssd and my hd is unplugged

Are you sure you have it set to boot to CD to re-install? Silly question, I know, but now that Windows is on your system it will go to that unless you have it set to load from CD, and only have SSD connected.

I set my cd-rom to the first slot in the bios and disabled my ssd. Im not sure if i set my cd to re-install (its a new disk and i cant even get to the main desktop)

Sorry, I didn't literally mean there's a re-install setting or something, I just meant do you have CD as first boot device in BIOS? If you're getting the messages that files are missing it's trying to go into Windows, not CD.

Also, why did you disable your SSD?
If you're trying to re-install on the SSD, you should have the SSD installed, and leave the other drive with the bad OS disconnected.

Duh what? The ntoskrnl.exe is a critical part of Windows so my guess is the installation got corrupted. While there is a 'fix' see -> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/filentoskrnlexe-status0xc0000098/2fd05bb4-95dd-478b-b903-796da3e7e7a3 my recommendation is to re-install Windows from scratch.

BIOS:
Prep work and skip if the BIOS is v3201, get a FAT32 formatted Flash drive and update you BIOS to the latest version:
EZ Flash 2 is a built-in App to allow the BIOS to be upgraded and USB Flash Drive is the storage for the BIOS ROM file to be stored/accessed from with BIOS EZ Flash 2. The USB Flash drive must be formatted in FAT-32.

Re-install Windows:
My preferred way to install Windows 7 is to use the Flash Drive method:
Preparation MBR:
* Backup data and any registered Apps deauthorize if possible
* Use the latest BIOS and you must use a minimum BIOS version which supports your components.
* Create Bootable Flash Drive MBR USB installer

Preparation GPT:
* Backup data and any registered Apps deauthorize if possible
* Use the latest BIOS and you must use a minimum BIOS version which supports your components i.e. 2TB+ HDD(s).
* Create Bootable Flash Drive GPT USB installer

Load Optimized (F5) and make sure BIOS set SATA -> AHCI. Next, remove (i.e. unplug all SATA Ports except the SSD (assuming that's where you want the OS) and ODD (DVD) and when the Install comes up select Custom (advanced). Next step, Delete ANY partitions and select Format. Re-install Windows.

If you watch the video it explains in detail how to create a Bootable Flash Drive Installer of Windows 7; once formatted it's as simple as drag & drop or copy & paste.

Easiest thing to do is turn on computer and start hitting F2 to get into bios screen. Make sure before you power it on you have only the SSD connected, NOT the drive with bad copy of windows.

You have the UEFI BIOS so down in bottom left corner there should be two icons, one that looks like a CD drive and the other is hard drive. If the CD drive is on the right, drag it to the left in place of the hdd, which puts it as 1st in boot order.Open CD tray and put in your new copy of Windows7 and press F10 and say yes to save changes and exit. The computer should boot to the CD, and install fresh copy of Windows.

Once OS is installed, go to the ASUS website and download the most current drivers (not the ones on the CD that came with board). You should be able to get online but just in case, have a USB drive with the just the LAN drivers on it to install after your computer boots up with OS on it and then go to ASUS for other drivers.

I did the flash drive install method, thought all was going well then about half way through, it says "windows cannot install required files. the file may be corrupt or missing. make sure all files are required for installation are available, and restart the installation. error code: 0x80070570"

Hmm...it seems like the 'image' is bad on the Flash Drive. This is probably caused from the DVD from the PC that copied the Windows DVD to the Flash drive.

If you have 'yet' another PC or wish to try an ISO (see below) then delete the Flash Drive contents and recopy or use the ISO extracted to the Flash Drive.

I ended up trying this and it yet again failed, I'm running memtest86 at the moment to see if its my ram, so far 35840 errors on pass 0 i think the ram might be the problem

Try booting with (1) stick at a time and test, and if you see errors then it's pointless to test the RAM further. Swap the stick out and retest. If one stick fails to boot or yields errors then it's pointless to continue, and you'll need to RMA the Kit then later start from scratch 🙁

That's what I'm doing now, I'm at work right now but I tested one stick, started with errors, swapped out for a different stick and while I was getting ready, it finished one pass without any errors, so we'll see when I get home (fingers crossed)

RMA the entire kit, no doubts. Using the Default settings should NOT render any errors whatsoever.

I got my computer up and running, it turned out to be a bad stick of memory so I'm returning that one and just running on 1 atm until I get another one from rma. Thanks jaquith for all your help =)
