Factory warranty wouldn't affect the numbers since they reflect tech support calls - calls you would still make under warranty. But statistically, these figures are garbage anyway. All data is garbage until proven otherwise. It's why science is so damn hard.
Oh, and my Apple has never given me trouble, therefore Apple is the most reliable. See what I mean? Useless. now don't get me wrong, Rescuecom's data might be solid, there just isn't enough information to judge.

All data is garbage.... Oops, I already said that.

It's ordered exactly in line with market share but Dell, Acer, Sony and a few others are missing.

Those with the most share have the poorest results. Knowing the kinds of calls that Tech Support gets and what kinds of people buy what sells most, it is absolutely no surprise to me. I still swear up and down that HP is better than Dell.

I like asus but I have read many horror stories of their bad customer service. So far I've been lucky, not one mobo from asus has gone bad for me ever since 1997 when I got my first pc and then changed the pcchips mobo six months later to an asus brand. Funny thing about hp, if you look inside an hp desktop you might notice that the mobo is made by asus but the mobo design was butchered by hp so they could stick a smaller cheaper crap power supply in there and somehow magically run the whole thing. For some reason or another, several mid to low end asus boards from 2004 end up dead by 2007 or 2008 especially the p4p800? 865 chipset board. Sata always fails a lot and this happens on hp computers from that time too the mobo goes bad and the system freezes a lot and sata fails a lot.

I like asus but I feel like the lucky token in a big casino with the odds getting worse by the second lol. I hope they can clean up their website and stop being so cheap with their customer service.

Asus or Imac let me see, I'll take Imac everyday of the week. I don't care who makes all the different
parts i just care about not haveing all the Viruses and driver issues and everything else related to a microsoft operated PC. I've had both and i will never leave Imac again.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to write on the internet :(
Why is it that most journalists copy+paste info from a source and interpret it the wrong way?

Don't think I'm being a jerk! I'll prove why Asus isn't more reliable than Apple based on the data in this article!

First, what does reliability mean? It's not based on the number of notebooks with problems, but on that number in regard to the total amount of notebooks sold!
According to the percentages in the table, Apple had 3 and a half times more complaints than Asus. On the other hand, Apple sold 3.5 more notebooks than Asus!
Put 2 and 2 together and you see that both Asus and Apple had the same percentage of customer complaints in regard to the amount of notebooks sold.

If I've lost you along the way, let's give an example (hypothetical):
Asus sold 1000 computers, out of these 100 customers called RESCUE-PC => 10%
Apple sold 3500 computers (as I've said, 8.7% market share in regard to 2.5% market share is 3.5 times higher) and had 350 complaints (again, 2.2% is about 3.5 times higher than 0.6%) => 10%

Any questions?

Chipi - work out the actual numbers.
2.5% / 0.6% = 416%
8.7% / 2.2% = 395%
These are the scores. Deal with it.

Do the math on the numbers all the way to the "Computer reliability score" on the right.
I did it and I've found an error of 0.002% .

The report might be inaccurate and useless, but it's not the maths.

Yes maisere, it's true, but 21% out of 416% can't make such a big difference considering that not everybody calls 1-800-RESCUE-PC! Have you thought about that? Do you know that IDC doesn't get data from every online and retail store?

Considering all of these, can you afford to say that Asus is more reliable than Apple if you don't have an accurate market share and statistics from every computer repair firm?

Don't you mean you will never own a microsoft PC again? There are other options besides these two, you know. ;)

Funny mention, up until recently almost ALL hp boards where made by Asus :p
Apple and Dell both use Foxconn. Yes that apple board is made right next to the dell one.

I'll take this opportunity to say this. I recently purchased a Gigabyte Mobo, Corsair PSU & RAM, etc. for a new PC. Would've went ASUS on the Mobo, but all the most recent info I could find led me to believe Gigabyte had surpassed ASUS recently in terms of quality. I don't know if that's true, but the Gigabyte certainly seems like a good product.

The reason for building my own new PC is because my Gateway GT5228 died after only 2.5 years of use. I spent around $900 on this machine (including 19" LCD) and earlier this year it starting having major problems. It would lock up while sitting at rest, would take several attempts to get it to reboot, and eventually wouldn't even POST anymore. Online research reveals this to be a COMMON problem with this and some other Gateway models! Also, since is micro-BTX and proprietary Gateway design, is almost beyond reason to repair. By all accounts, this problem is usually Mobo and/or PSU related, but almost never resolved by PSU replacement. I did try another PSU in mine with no success. I also understand that any replacement Mobo from Gateway is likely to have the same defect as the original.

So that's all I have to say about Gateway and where I'd put them on my reliability list! I now see why one would build their own PC even though you can often buy a pre-built for the same or less. Those cheap pre-builts are cheap for a reason!

I used to like Asus. They try, and do some things very well, but on the whole, hardware problems are their Achilles heel. I have owned motherboards, a graphics card, and a netbook with the Asus brand. Features and software were great. But, both the motherboards and the graphics card ultimately died due to fan problems. Asus was good about replacing the chipset fan that died and didn't take out the entire mobo, but even the replacement failed after a couple months. Lost a graphics card due to the fan seizing up. The netbook had an annoying whine that was just too much to deal with... when googling the problem, it seems it is very common, either it bothers you a lot, or doesn't. Granted, this is all anecdotal, but Asus has used more than it's 3 strikes with me, so I wont be purchasing from them in the future

Like it is said, "Of course, these scores only account for the number of tech support calls relative to new computers shipped during that particular period." & "Of course, the more you ship, the more potential problems there will be" ... and among other things.

Therefore, you can't make a reliable article out of a few pieces of facts while leaving the rest of the pieces out. Pun intended.

I was surprised to not even see Dell on the list. I use Dell at work and home. Their business support is very good (from what I experience on a day-to-day basis). But their home support leaves a TON to be desired. Still didn't think it was that bad tho. Oh well. I have a two Dells for work, an Apple and Asus at home. I like them all.

Chipi, quit while you're ahead. The numbers show that Asus has more reliable equipment. It doesn't matter if Asus is being outsold by Apple by 3 times or 100 times, the fact is, Asus machines have less issues as a whole than Apple's. If 1 in 100 Asus machines have issues and 3 in 100 Apple machines have issue, it doesn't matter if Apple sold 900 machines and Asus only sold 300, there's still only 3 (1 x (300/100)) Asus machines with issues while there are 27 (3 x 900/100) Apple machines with issues.

holy hell... Apple is a PC! with a different OS. You think if you install Windows on the mac its going to sudenly become more unreliable?

Asus as long as i remember have built quality hardware. I always buy asus MB or Gigabyte.
Apple farms out hardware to everyone else... they dont even make the parts in thier machines.

Seriously... go to the damn store and buy the parts to build your own mac if you like it so bad, itll be the EXACT same as prebuilt without the apple tax and warranty.

I've had zero problems with my ASUS N80vn laptop i've had for about 8 months. I also work in a laptop repair shop that does work on macs and pc's and I have only repaired one asus laptop in 3 years! Also ASUS's 1 year accidental damage warranty is great!
