ASUS Rampage IV Extreme - Common Building Errors

Common Building errors: :bounce:

1. 3~4-WAY SLI/CF will only work with triple width GPUs if the OEM cooling is removed and replaced with the appropriate water blocks or LN2 pots. Most ASUS high-end GPU's also are not reference designed therefore the vast majority of water blocks will not work or fit.

2. Check your prices!!! Pricing, especially now, is like a 'bouncing bunny'; they must be good at time of contest closing. I had several of my build's prices change in the last day.

3. ASUS Rampage IV Extreme can only boot with (x2) SSD's in RAID 0 and not (x3 or more) in SATA 6Gb/s. More than (2) drives in RAID 0 requires a RAID Card e.g. LSI PCIE x4/x8 SATA3 otherwise the SSD's will run 3Gb/s (300 MB/s). Boot drive RAID cannot cross SATA controllers.
Intel® X79 chipset :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), red
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), black
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10

ASMedia® PCIe SATA controller :
2 x eSATA 6Gb/s port(s), red
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), red

4. ASUS Rampage IV Extreme is not the same as the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme/BF3 they have different SKU's and specifications, and the contest specification is the standard edition.

5. ASUS X79 MOBO's has only been tested with OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 for boot drives, and RevoDrive's will not RAID 0 for boot drives though can be software RAID 0 in OS.

6. Corsair H100 requires 2X120 case venting or won't fit/work. Only a few cases will support 3x120 or larger radiators.

7. PSU problems:
(a) under powered - use 100% TPD/100% Load (especially for 'Fastest' scenarios -> http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/
(b) inadequate PCIE power connectons {GTX 590 2X8-pin/GPU, GTX 580 6-pin + 8-pin/GPU <or> 2X8-pin/GPU, HD 6970 2X8-pin/GPU}

8. No 2-WAY Crossfire will work without separte purchase of an 'extended' CF Bridge.

9. Complex builds - while I appreciate the use of water cooling, I noted that just about all of them will not work for a variety of reasons; e.g. wrong blocks, incorrect ID/OD components, missing items, etc.

There's a significant number of builds posted that simply will not work, and the 'corrections' will in many instances exceed the build cost limits.

Hope this is helpful! Good Builds & Good Luck!

I am not a Judge or in anyway 'Official' to the contest. I was away for over a week and wished I could have posted this earlier.

I have a problem with a new build, specs are:

Processor: Intel i-7 3960X LGA 2011
Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV extreme
GPU(s): TWO XFX Radeon HD6990 4GB GDDR5
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1600 MHz CL9 LP
Hard Drives: Intel 510 Series 250 GB SSD SATA 6GB/S,
TWO Seagate 2TB Barracuda XT 7200rpm 64 (SATA 6GB/S)
Optical Drive: Samsung D.12x BD-ROM/DVDRW SATA Combo
Cooling: Corsair Hydro H80 CPU Cooler (water cooler)
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 800D Full Tower

The problem I am having is this, I plugged the SSD into the regular 6GB/S plug and the 2 hard drives into the AsMedia 6GB/S plugs, installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on the SSD no problem, but the only drives recognized by windows are C: (SSD) and D: (optical drive), the two 2TB hard drives are no where to be seen. I installed the ASM1061 controller driver as recommended in the rampage iv extreme user guide, rebooted, and still no hard drives under My Computer folder, just the SSD and optical drive as before. I would like to have the SSD for the operating system only, and the two 2TB hard drives in a Raid 0 configuration for data/programs/games, all running at 6GB/S. I thought I should contact someone who could help me before I start messing with the Raid configuration. I contacted Asus and they were no help at all, they just said it should work. Could please help me with this setup? Please tell me where all the drives should be plugged into the motherboard and what drivers I need to install to make windows 7 recognize the two 2 TB hard drives. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks. P.S. I may not reply for 2 weeks, as I am leaving tomorrow working out of town and not taking a computer with me.

If it were 'me' use the Intel SATA2 ports for the RAID 1 HDD(s); the performance is essentially the same and I TRUST the Intel RAID!!!!. Use Ctrl + I to set up the RAID 1 (mirroring). Keep in mind, a mechanical HDD on it's best day runs ~130~150MB/s and SATA2 is rated up to 300MB/s aka twice the speed of the HDD's.
Intel® X79 chipset :
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), black

Also, use BIOS Version 1005 which offers some much needed bug fixes.

For ASMedia - Does NOT SUPPORT RAID (0 or 1)!!!
1. BIOS ASMedia Storage Controller -> Enabled
2. BIOS ASM1016 -> AHCI Mode
3. In Windows you 'can' set-up a SOFTWARE RAID -> http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/36504/how-to-create-a-software-raid-array-in-windows-7/

IMO - DO NOT USE RAID 0 for ANY DATA DRIVE!!! IF (1) drive fails the POOF ALL DATA is LOST!

i need help my computer i made wont start. befor i tell you what i think the problem is i'll tell you my specs
asus rampage 4 extreme bf3
gts450 geforce/evga
i7 intel proccesor 3820 Quad Core 10MB 3.6GHZ
64 gb ssd
1tb green western
vengeance 16gb 4x4 or my vengeance 32gb 4x8 both ddr3
the problem is the ram on my mother board the led keeps lighting up i thounght maybe its the power so i gave it more power from the 4 pin connecter right beside it then i thought it was the ram itself but it still shows the light but idk im so frustrated.

Update the BIOS via USB Flashback, and then Breadboard (outside the case) with a minimal configuration i.e. no Front Panel/USB/etc Headers, 1 stick of RAM (see RAM insert), make sure the 8-pin/24-pin and GPU PCIe 'pins' are all connected and properly seated.

If that doesn't work then start a new post and PM me the link to the post.

Hey Jaquith. Got a couple questions for you.

1. Doing my first watercooloing setup :) Planning for 3930k @ 4.8-5ghz. Can I just have a block to the CPU and VRM and not the south bridge. The PCH heatsink is connected by a heatpipe to the VRM heatsinks so I don't know how that would work. Ive read the VRM is the only component on the board that really heats up.

2. Is the any way to add a sound card to my 4-way setup? I was thinking of using a pic-e x1 extension and feed it between 3rd & 4th GPU and mount sound card below 4th card. Would that work?

You say you gave the ram more power by connecting the 4-pin power cable, does that mean it wasn't connected previously?
Basically, you have fried your ram by not providing support power in the first place with the 4-pin connector.

Next, the 64gb SSD is barely enough to run the OS. Even if you install the games and apps and programs to the 1TB hdd, there are still system fles loaded into the main drive as well as temp files during game play and runnoning programs.

How much free space is left on the SSD?
