Asus Srix GTX 970 Driver Installation Problems (and a Headache)

I have a Asus Strix GTX 970 graphics card (received last week) that I have been trying to install the Graphics Drivers without success. I have tried the Asus installation disc (failed). I have downloaded multiple versions of the possible drivers (Asus 344.05, 344.16 - WHQL, 344.48 - WHQL). I have installed them manually through the Windows 7 Pro Device Manager (Display Adapter) The drivers appear to install. But when the system reboots, it gets to the Windows screen and fails. Then I have to go to safe mode to recover the system. I have had to restore the system to a point prior to the driver installation. The Safe-Mode Startup repair function fails. I have deleted the prior graphics drivers with Windows uninstaller and DDU.

Another aspect is that Windows detects a generic graphics card (without identifying the graphics card) and reports "standard VGA graphics adapter" in the Device Manager. I also tried the Geforce Driver system scanner and it failed. The Asus GPU Tweak software installed with errors (no access to graphics card), so I deleted it. The hardware ID under "standard VGA graphics adapter" properties - details appears to be correct.

I have tried reseating the card. I have moved the card to a different PCI express slots. I have reseated the PCI-E 8 pin power cable (the cards LED turns white indicating good power connection). The card requires 500 Watt power supply. I have a Seasonic Platinum 860 watt power supply installed, so I don't think power is a problem. I have tried the installation with the graphics forced to the PCI express slot and on Auto within the BIOS. I have the latest BIOS version (1903) installed on the motherboard (Asus ROG Maximus V Formula Z77). At this point, the only things I haven't done is clearing the CMOS & reflashing the BIOS and reloading the Windows 7 Pro operating system (I'm not sure that they would help). The system works fine using the integrated graphics other than this problem.

One last point, I read in Legit Reviews that one of the reasons for the Geforce 344.16 - WHQL driver update was an error in Device Manager for Asus (and Asrock) motherboards. They didn't specifically mention my motherboard in the article. Perhaps the bug isn't fixed yet.

If anyone can help me resolve this problem, I would appreciate the suggestions. I waited over a month to get this graphics card, I would rather not RMA it without at least trying to fix the issue. If I do have to exchange it, are there any suggestions to avoid a new driver conflict. And I can re-flash the system and reload the OS, I just didn't want to go through the trouble with a system that works fine otherwise.

Solution
Hello, the PSU/ MoBo and all other components are more than capable of containing the card. Driver issues are frequent, but here you've tried pretty much everything other than what you said you've left. BIOS reseting and flashing will certaining not help either.

I had to think hard to come up with some more options, but I've a couple of things for you to check out and see if it helps.

-Check if regedit is clean of previous drivers.

-If you can, put a different GPU (not your old one, a new one to this system) in your system, and see if it works fine.

-If possible, install this card on another system, and see if the card works fine.

I know the last two options are not very easy to do. I'd remove any non-basic device connected to...
Are there any countries nearer to India where that isn't the case? Shipping costs from the US to India are bound to be high. Would ordering components from Taiwan or even Japan be any cheaper? I have no idea what shipping is available there, or what would be involved in ordering from a another country. In Europe, it is fairly common (from what I understand).

To be honest, shipping (even from Newegg right now) doesn't cost much, the customs and taxes do. They can increase the initial price by around 5-10%, like from 20k INR to 22-23k and with shipping fees of 1k, they usually match market prices, no matter where it came from. Yes I can save up around 0.5k by getting from Japan, but that actually is quite immaterial to the overall costs as components, say GTX 970 cost around 25-29k depending on model. 0.5k makes little change to that.

That list was actually helpful, altough I knew the stores before hand, still I'll see at stores of nearby countries and match prices, if difference is considerable (including shipping), I might lock on the location from where my second 290 will arrive next year or so :)

Hi,

Try installing a different language driver. Mostly if the one you're having problems with is the international (UK english) then try US english or the other way around. For me the intl didn't work at all, but the US did. Go figure, one'd expect language doesn't cause problems...

I will try that in the future if it happens again. I returned the card. I had thirty days to return the card. With the initial shipping, the troubleshooting time (8 days), and the return shipping time counting down to the 30 day limit. I couldn't spare any more time on trouble shooting. And to be honest the only thing I hadn't tried was clearing the CMOS and reflashing the same latest motherboard BIOS. And since the motherboard was functioning fine on every other operating task, I didn't think it would help. I had already reinstalled the operating system. So I got the RMA and returned it It is supposed to be delivered tomorrow to the return center (delayed from Friday) so it had four or five days left on the 30 day return limit.

Hopefully the new GTX 970 will be a better graphics card without any hardware problems. My fingers will be crossed. But I will add your suggestion to my tool kit. There was nothing odd about the installation or the system that should cause the graphics card to fail.

I received my replacement GTX 970. After looking what was available, I ended up going with the Asus card again. If the MSI Gaming GTX 970 had a back-plate, I would have went that direction. Newegg does have a limited edition GTX970 with a back-plate and a gold color scheme but it wasn't worth $50 extra. And besides the color sucked anyway.

When I got the new Asus Strix GTX970 OC installed, it had the same errors as the other card. Again I went through all of the fixes I could think of until I was left with just clearing the CMOS and reflashing the BIOS as possibilities.

Well it took some more frustration, but I managed to get the BIOS flashed . It already had the latest BIOS so their was no update per-say. I also managed to loose the copy of the CMOS so I had to re-enter those settings. I tried a few things in the BIOS that I hadn't done before. And of course the system didn't boot. So, I cleared the CMOS once again, and re-entered the Bios settings again (more carefully this time). And then it booted normally.

I had my new Asus Strix GTX 970 installed all this time. And when it restarted Windows, I noticed that the monitor appeared different. So I checked the Device Manager. Every time before when I checked it their were two Display Adapters listed. One was for the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics adapter, and the other was for the the new graphics card. Even when I tried deleting the Intel graphics adapter, Windows would put it back. So, I thought I was making headway. I tried updating the graphics card driver to 344.75 once again.
And voila it worked. So long story short, I've finally got my new Asus Strix GTX 970 OC graphics card up and running.

I probably will try over clocking it later. Right now I'm just getting used to the new (fully functioning ) graphics card. Even my text seems sharper (Plasma HDTV). I updated the driver to my Asus VG248QE 3D 144Hz gaming monitor. And I know it is working better with the new Nvidia card. Now I need to decide about getting the G-SYNC kit for the monitor. I also need the 3D Kit too.
