mapesdhs: How much did the X2 550 cost you? How much extra would the X4 955 be now? Think you'll switch at all?

I paid $100 for my Phenom II X2 550. The X4 955 is currently $180.

I might upgrade after the next die shrink, but my X2 550 works for me right now. When I run my base clock at 225 rather than the default 200, it gives me an effective 3.48GHz (225 × 15.5) core processor clock. That bumps from Sandra Dhrystone score to 27.2 GIPS. That's over twice the score of my older Athlon X2 4850e.

I can push it to 3.85GHz stable if I ramp up the multiplier (550 is unlocked), but that causes CnQ to deactivate. That seems to be the story for all of the Black Edition Phenoms. No CnQ when you move above the native multiplier.

I like how AMD is appealing to budget builders :) their product line is now more stable ;) i hope they will start supporting triple-channel memory if they haven't yet :)

I had a look on the usual suspects (Newegg, NCIX, TigerDirect). I found one that was an Athlon II X3 435 at 3.0 GHz (seems like the right processor, correct?) but the wattage stated was 95W. Does AMD list the average, max, or min draw in their specs? 95W is a big difference from 45W.

i'am sorry for AMD but it is clearly loosing the battle with Intel ... because when you buy AMD you will save on the CPU and MB ... but anyways you have to have ram and hdd and gf card ... it would be stupid to buy AMD when you can have 3x powerfull machine for only a $100 more

[citation][nom]zinabas[/nom]"We will also be simulating an Athlon II X3 720 with a Phenom II X4 965 by lowering the CPU multiplier and disabling the forth CPU core"[/citation]
Doesnt the Athlon II also lack L3 cache, which is the key difference in their prices?

You caught the mistake, it should be Phenom II X3 720. Fixing now!
