I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 1.04 board. I read on the Asus site that my board supports the 3200+ FSB 400. I was a bit leary, so I contacted the Asus tech support. They said that the board would support 400 FSB, but I would have to run my memory at DDR 333. That seems weird. Usually you run the FSB and memory in sync. Wouldn't I lose a lot of performance by doing this? Also, has anyone run a Rev 1.0x board at 400 FSB and DDR 400? Thanks.

I had a A7N8X with a 2500+ at 3200+ speeds, yet it was slower than at 2500+ speeds because it was out of sync with the memory (DDR333)..

The problem with rev 1.02 1.04 and 1.06 is they have a great deal of trouble getting the fsb over 191 - 193 its a northbridge problem I believe a lack of voltage and a poor heatsink not tuly flat.

the majority of these boards will not exceed 193 fsb. and you are correct you need to run the memory in sync or you will take a performance hit.

updating your bios might help but most people are stuck at 191 or 193 fsb with these boards.

I'd try running 191 fsb in sync with memory then upping the multi as far as you care to go should do a multi of 12 with ease if it's unlocked.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

To be frank 200fsb with mem at 333 will not hinder performance too dramaticly (well in games anyway)seeing as in the recent THG review of the athlon 64 shows comparisons of the 3000+ @166 & 3000+ @200, the difference between the two in terms of FPS is about 1 or 2 less for the 3000 @166, but it depends what you are going to use your pc for. Secondly are you 100% sure that your motherboard cannot support ddr400 feature? correct me if im wrong but im sure the deluxe features this or am i getting confused with the asus A7N8X-E deluxe board?. (Sorry if im wrong about the boards capabilitys).

My system:
AMD Athlon Barton 3000xp+
ATI Radeon Hercules 9800pro 128mb
WD 120gb 7,200rpm 8mb cache.
512mb twinmos pc3200
ASUS a7v8x-x Mobo.

I want to get a 3200+ with the FSB 400 but according to you guys, my Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 1.04 will not run 400 FSB stable. According to Asus, you can run my board at 400 FSB, but the memory must be set to DDR 333. I have already ran my RAM at Dual Channel DDR 400 on this board working without a hitch. So, the board can run DDR 400, and FSB 400, but not together. So, I am thinking it may be a better option to get a 3000+ Barton and run at 333 FSB.

I have the same board as you and although I haven't tried using a 200MHz FSB yet, I think that you may have misunderstood what they (Asus' tech support) have told you. If you upgrade your BIOS to the latest version, then your mobo supports (according to Asus) 400MHz FSB, period. There can be no discrimination between the CPU's FSB and memory speed, since Asus offers an option in the BIOS where the memory operates 1:1 as the CPU's FSB. What I think really happened there, is that you told them that you are currently using PC2700 memory, so their reply was that a new CPU supporting 400FSB will operate just fine on that board, but your memory won't be able to reach that speed, so you willl have to run it at DDR333.

Totaly agree.

Have you actully tried running DDR400 and 400mhz FSB together??

This is the note I sent to Asus:

"I see on your web site that my motherboard supports the Athlon XP 3200+ 400 FSB. Is this correct? I have heard that this board does not run stable when the FSB is set to
200. With the proper BIOS, will this board run this processor stable at stock speed? Thanks"

Here is how they replied:

Yes this motherboard can support 3200+ (400mhz fsb),
when you use 400mhz fsb cpu on this motherboard , remember to set memory speed to ddr333 mode.

I don't know how to take this. It just doesn't make sense. If it can run 400 FSB, it should run DDR 400. I have 2x256 MB Corsair DDR 400 modules.

Re: If you upgrade your BIOS to the latest version, then your mobo supports (according to Asus) 400MHz FSB, period.

Asus can claim whatever they like but the fact is 400 fsb is unreachable for many of these (non verison 2) boards.

I had that board and only ever got 192 - 193 stable we had this discusion many times in the nforcershq forum and it was a very common problem. I tried everything with this asus 1.04 board latest bios that stated support for 400 cpu but never any luck. I took all components out and put into a gygabyte nforce 2 board and 200 fsb was no problem at all.

ask schmide he had the same board and the same problem.

Re: Then, would I be better going with an Athlon 3000+ with the 333 FSB and running my memory in sync at DDR 333?

If I had to use that board I'd probably get the cheaper barton 2500 with some good pc3200 mem, then up the fsb to 191 or whatever it will allow. use timmings 2-2-2-11 and keep mem in sync for best performance on these boards.

This is the cheapest solution and would give you performance close to 3200 @ 400

Well I guess i'm the lucky one. I have a revision 1.04 board. And i'm running a 200fsb on my Xp2700+ stable!

I'm using bios 1004 which isn't the newest but it was the first to enable 200fsb on this revision. I haven't bothered to update the bios to the newest one cause everything is working fine and I have no complaints.

I previously had 1 stick of PC2700 and 1 PC3200 and that was limiting my FSB to about 190. when I sold the PC2700 and got a stick of OCZ PC3200EL. I have no problems at 200fsb. System runs great.

You might wanna check your PSU and the what kind of Ram.

My specs
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?rigid=16172" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?rigid=16172</A>

on a side note my two sticks of PC3200 are different also
one is EL the other is not (both OCZ just different Latency)! I was very fixed on the dual channal kits. But after running with two different sticks and the system is totally stable, the kits don't guarantee anything as far as my system is concerned.
