ATI card naming

someone explain the ATI naming game.
there is 9600, 9800, x300, x700, x800, x1300, x1600, etc, then there is pro, gt, gto, xt, xtx, etc. so confusing. :?: Thank you

Think of the "x" as a "10" and it might help you. Bigger numbers generally higher performance. x1k is current gen, x800 is previous gen and 9xxx are gen before that.

In the 9xxx days the "pro" suffix indicated the highest performance model. At least with the 9700 anyway. I think there might have been a 9600 and 9800xt but not sure.

These days, the more "XTXTXTXTXT etc.." tacked on at the end, the faster the card is. X1950XTX is the current fastest single gpu from ATi. Enough X's for ya?

They did away with the pro suffix for awhile but re-introduced it for the x1x50 refresh.

General Rule of Thumb for ATi nomenclature:

1. XTX > XT > PRO > GT(O?) > LE/SE (Value Models).
2. The lowest model # will typically give worse performance than the highest model # of the previous generation, and often cost more just because "the number is bigger".

I.E. A 9800 pro is faster than an x300se. A x850xt is faster than an x1300.

The x1900xt is a pretty good buy at the moment.

Peep some benchies if you're still confused.

makes more sense now. i getting a powercolor x800gto for 89bucks cant beat it

yup, and a X800 is twice as good as a X1600. Gotta love those stupid names!

You forgot to mention that Matrox makes the 650 graphics card that is atleast 4 times faster then the x800gto hands down no question about it.
