Hello, and thanks for your help. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 8 (a clean install), and was updating all of my drivers. Everything was going fine until I got to the drivers for my Crossfire 6870/6850 graphics cards. During the installation of the latest (13.1) catalyst drivers, my screen flashes as normal during a driver update, but then freezes on a black screen. On a hard restart I get a BSOD on atikmpag.sys. This issue also occurred on windows 7 with anything past the 12.11 drivers. I tried manually installing the drivers in safe mode, which works but still BSODs on a restart. The most progress I've made was getting to my desktop with the 13.1 drivers manually installed, but the BSOD occurred after a restart. I'm not overclocking anything. Thanks in advance.

Specs:
Windows 8
AMD Phenom II x6 1075T (stock)
Crossfire HD6870/6850
128gb Crucial M4 SSD
Asus M5A97

Current drivers:
Catalyst 12.10
All other drivers (chipset, SATA etc) all up to date

Which is another reason why they aren't supporting our hardware any more. It seems like AMDs only interest at this point is customers who purchase 7000 series Radeons and their newest motherboard/CPU platforms. I find it hard to believe after four months of "testing" their 13.1 series drivers and numerous reports from customers complaining of black screens/BSODs that they're still searching for a solution. AMD is a multi billion corporation and I'm sure they have the technology and the engineering staff to diagnose this problem, they just don't want to.

I still think people should be filing a bug report with there motherboard manufacturer as this from what we know seems to be related to the 970 or the board there on, I know 12.10 worked and after that any driver would fail, but one thing I can tell you is nothing is wrong with my graphic cards and most people are able to use crossfire using 13.1 + drivers excluding our boards of coarse, and if it is down to hardware on our boards amd might not be able to fix the problem as it may cause more problems with drivers for others, more then its worth anyway.

Hello,
I don't think this is an only 970 AMD board issue.
I have an old Asus P7P55D with an intel I5 750 and a sapphire HD5770 and i got a similar problem (on win7 64bits) : when i install any driver past the 12.10, i get a bsod a few second after launching any game.
I tried all drivers past 12.10 and all of them are bugged for my case. Some of them do a bsod just after rebooting after installing, some of them make the machine instable and bring bsod randomly, and in the best cases they crashes when i launch a game.
The only thing i can do is to reboot in safe mode, desinstall the driver and clean with some softs, reboot and reinstall the 12.10...

I was thinking that i was alone in this case till i discover this topic...

Your issue is different for three reasons. You only have one card, you are able to actually boot/use windows, and driver install doesn't fail for you/ game launches do.

download driver sweeper, uninstall ccc completely not just drivers remove ccc to, restart safe mode, run driver sweeper and remove all leftover crap from your display, boot normally and install ccc again but this time do a manual install an opt out from installing audio drivers.

god I must be getting old, not even 30 yet. if a motherboard supports an i5 processor it cant be that old, and if it was to old win 7 would not be a supported or necessarily compatible with it.

Emailed AMD tech support for the second time since January almost 48 hours ago and still no response. It seems like AMD really have their heads up their a$$es on this one. My next step will be emailing ASUS. If AMD says our issue is a hardware issue that means most of us will have to purchase new motherboards and or graphics cards. This thread is about users facing the issue of BLACK SCREEN and/or FULL SYSTEM LOCKUP during catalyst install. Here are my specs just to clarify:

AMD FX-4100 quad-core 3.6ghz processor
ASUS M5A97 EVO motherboard
G.Skill 4x4gb DDR1833 ram
(2x) HIS Radeon HD6850 Barts gfx
Intel 128GB Sata 3 SSD
HT Claro Halo soundcard

@ everyone indiscriminately and kickthedamcat in particular
Sorry for not replying to the thread sooner - real-life stuff got the better of me, so I couldn't give as much time to our issue as I would've wanted to. Anyways, very recently I got an amazing reply from AMD (I completed their driver issues form and called them over the phone a week or so ago), and it goes like this:

"Dear Mark,
Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200544080]} has been reviewed and updated.
Response and Service Request History:
We have identified the issue with the AMD 970 chipset when using crossfire and our developers looking into this issue and will be putting out a updated driver patch to fix this shortly.

Thank you for informing us about this issue and our apologies for the inconvenience.

As far as I can see, this is the first time that AMD have officially recognised that there is a problem with the 970 chipset per se - in other words, we weren't crazy to complain, and our line of reasoning was sound. Maybe there is hope for us yet. What do you think?

That is basically what they had told me before 13.4 and 13.5 were released. stating that the fix would be included in that release. And it wasnt. I hope they actually fix this. I have ASUS working on it too now. did the Live Chat thing today and filled out a form for the guy he even emailed me back looking for more details.

I mean, i bought a new MOBO so I no longer have this issue, but i am here 100% to back this up.

OK, but did they officially admit that there was a problem with the 970 chipset as such? Or did they just say that there was some kind of 'driver - hardware' problem?

Here is the email i got last month on the 5th. Dear Justin,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200539460]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

This is an issue that we have seen reported a few times and are always related to having 2 cards installed, in CrossFire, during the 13.1/13.2/13.3 installation on a 970-chipset motherboard. I would recommend sticking with the 12.11Beta suite for the time being (available at www.amd.com/beta), and we would appreciate if you would go to www.amd.com/betareport and report this issue through the Error reporting form, and monitor the 13.3 Beta page to see when an update occurs that addresses this issue. We are currently investigating the root cause of the problem (which seems limited to 970-chipset motherboards, predominantly by ASUS), but there is currently no official timeframe for resolution at this time. You can also try an installation with just 1 card installed, and when the system boots up successfully try to install the 2nd card at that time, as this has proven to be a viable option in the mean time for some users.

The issue only occurs during installation when two cards are present in CrossFire mode on the 970-chipset, and this should be resolved with the 13.4 release coming later this month. The link above will be very helpful in our investigation, if you would be willing to provide that information to us.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Justin,
Thanks for sharing this info, and for your continued involvement - even after changing your mobo.
In any case, I would say that they replied to you a bit more circumspectly. A lot of 'ifs' and 'maybes' and 'shoulds'. Whereas the gist of what they wrote me is that there is an issue that will be fixed shortly.
Now, it may look like I'm clutching at straws and attaching too much importance to phraseology. I don't think so, however. AMD have been - and probably are still being - badgered by a whole lot of people, and clearly have to come up with a resolution. From a business perspective, they just can't screw this up. What would they say, that they've just given up on the 970 chipset without informing anyone - motherboard manufacturers, end users, etc. That would be more or less suicide.
In my opinion, the key problem is time, as in 'When are they going to come up with a fix'. Now, assuming that they've been pestered enough to admit to there being a problem, I would think that a month is more or less the max that they have for finally finding a resolution. Whatever, that's the time I'm giving them.

I have faith that amd or asus will have this problem fixed, just when is the question because for some people its been a issue for over 4 months. sent asus a detailed bug report and the person seemed legit and concerned about the problem, I have a feeling i'm going to be told its a driver issue and therefore AMD's responsibility, but trying them wont hurt, also they now know how to reproduce the problem which is not very hard.

Got an email from asus today they have reproduced the problem.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Technical Service.

Thank you for your feedback.
We have duplicated this problem.
We would try to find out a resolution.
Anything update, we would contact with you.

Sorry for the trouble. Wish you a good day.

If you continue to experience issues in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Best Regards,

Sorry I was gone for a while. I closed my support ticket with AMD after a few mails and they said they are working on it. I told them we've heard that before but they insist they are going to fix it on the next driver release. I also asked for a release date but didn't get one. Long story short here is a message:

I apologize for all the inconvenience and the problems where Crossfire will not work with Catalyst 13.X.

Since the issue is reported and I can tell you the driver team is well aware of it, the Crossfire issue is being worked on.

Unfortunately, I do not have a driver release date to give to you. At this point, I agree with you the problem is driver specific so the only option is to use Catalyst 12.10 while I ask that you stay patient and wait for the next driver release.

If I do not hear back from you, the service request will be permanently closed after 10 days. If more time is needed, please reply back to me before the 10 days expire. And I will ensure this service request remains open for you.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

AMD Global Customer Care

Well, let's hope they keep their promise this time...

This is good news. I have not received anything back from ASUS yet, but I feel they know the issue exists. I really hope these two companies are able to resolve the issue for you 970 chipset users.

Asus have duplicated the problem and have confirmed its the vga driver and that I should push amd for a fix. F***, they asked if I would like them to push this issue and I said yes hopefully they will listen to a partner ASUS, god fn damit I been going around in circles for months.
have you guys had any luck, any updates or idears.

Thank you very much, it works !

also in all the messing around I have done people with other problems different from mine may need to uninstall this update from Microsoft, update for Microsoft windows (KB2670838)
some platform update shit. fixed my media player problems :) also seems not to like radeon graphics

your welcome glad it works, that will be $200 THANK YOU
joke :)

off subject internet explorer 10 causes similar problems to update KB2670838, seems related to amd hardware, maybe the bulldozer processors are showing problems now that I was warned about.
update
sorry 2 quick to judge, 2670838 update was installed again even though I had it hidden only thing I can think of is that installing ie10 installs 2670838

Why on earth are you using IE? That's just, an awful idea in the first place! Chrome all the way!

Ya I haven't touched IE in many years.

OT: ya come on ASUS! If AMD going to listen to anybody it would be a major partner like them! They're way more likely to listen to ASUS than us.
