ATI Radeon 5670 512Mb vs 1Gb?

Hey guyz, i asked a similar question a few days ago, but i wasn't quiet satisfied with the answer i got, so i hope you guyz can give me a straight forward answer on this question.

Question:

Does the 1gig version offer better performance than the 512mb version, or is the dif just a few FPS that is not worth the extra 15$


P.S Im just looking for an upgrade to my Desktop's integrated graphics, and im short on cash right now, so i cant upgrade my 300W PSU to get a better card, so im getting a 5670 since it doesn't require an aux PCI-E connector for power, and doesent eat to much power also.

CPU: Phenom II x4 820 2.80ghz
RAM: DDR3 1066 8Gigs
PSU: 300W
Monitor: 23' LCD Samsung 1920x1080
OS: W7 Home Premium 64bit

On average my System uses about 1.5gigs of Ram with only the essential programs running, along with my Anti Virus, so i have plenty of RAM left.

Have you considered the HD6670 instead? It also doesn't need a power connector and is faster than the HD5670. At your resolution you should really get the best card you can.

I dont mind lowering the rez for games if i have 2, that card is kinda on the expensive side at 100$(1 gig version) i haven't been able to find a 512mb version on newegg for that card (which is my main online store). Also on the benchmark comparison of the 2 cards i only saw a dif of mostly 5 frames between cards on games, so for me is not worth the extra $ for just for an extra 5 FPS.

5 Frames? No thats not true. The 1GB only gets like 2 fps more at most. And most test only showed it getting like 1 fps more.

But if youre willing to get the 1GB you might as well get the 6670 doesnt cost any more than the 5670 1GB and is about 10% faster than the 5670.

Iirc, the HD6670 also offers BluRay decoding without using the CPU; in case that makes a difference.

There's hardly any difference between the 512MB and 1GB version of the HD 5670. Having said that the lowest price for a HD 5670 is for a 1GB version.

Thanks. Yeah, I expect to lose that Gold Medal as I get more "Best Answer" votes.

My Gold Medal for the "Flat Panel Monitors" sub-forum only lasted about 6 weeks, before I "tilted" and it reverted back to Bronze back in April.

I know... From now on I will give bad advice in this part of the forum so no one would ever vote for me again. Something like:

"No, no, no. The GTX 590 is a piece of crap and is not good for gaming at 2560x1600 resolution. You want a Radeon HD 5450."

That way I get to keep my Gold Medal.

I wish i could get free shipping or a low 7$ shipping lol shipping for those cards for me is 16-20$ (i live in Puerto Rico), also rebates take way 2 long to get here a month+, and it doesn't really affect the money i have to spend when i pay for the card.


so you guys are basically saying the performance difference between 512mb and 1 gig version is next to nothing, i wonder why company's make a 512mb version and a 1 gig then :/. (not counting the different memory type versions DDR 3-5).

This hasn't been mentioned but this difference actually matters. Stick with the DDR5 version if at all possible. DDR3 vs DDR5 is much more important than the amount of memory on a card like this.

Yes to my understanding DDR5 is better since it's an upgrade over DDR3, and it has 4 times the bandwidth of DDR3 (so i read).

i would reccommend the 1GB version at high resolutions, but at your resolution it should be fine.

Well guyz I just got an extra 20 bucks, that should cover the shipping of the card, so i have about 100$ to buy a GPU, so im going with the 6670 1G DDR5 version, since i can afford it now. This card should meet my needs, until i upgrade my PSU and GPU for battlefield 3, hopefully a Radeon 6850 will play the game with medium settings and a decent rez 720p+.

I was going to buy a XfX 6670 since it's a slim card, and it wouldn't take the PCI-E x1 slot next to it, but the fan and heat sink look rather small, and the temp in my room sometimes gets high so il sacrifice the slot, since i wont be using it any time soon.

It's a good choice and yeah, a dual slot card is a good idea unless you really need the slot it will block. At 720p I doubt the HD667o will have problems handling BF3 on medium.
