[citation][nom]bogggled[/nom]"notice how little the 5770 uses at idle"I would hardly call >60% of the energy consumption of the whole rest of the computer "little"[/citation]

'Little' is used as a relative term here, boggled.
Look at the other cards its up against.

very disappointing product.

this is what happens when there is no competition from nvidia.

ati gets greedy and releases underwhelming products and too high of a price point.

This would have been much more attractive at $200 not enough reason to spend the extra cash over a 5770 and not enough performance to justify picking this over a 5850.

Yeah, I'm disappointed too. I've been thinking about an upgrade; I'm not sure a HD5770 is quite enough of a jump from my HD4850, but the HD5850 is a little too rich. This card is too near the former's performance to be priced so near the latter. And TWO power connectors???
Maybe Fermi coming out will help prices settle down, but I don't think I see this one in my future.

[citation][nom]MCMunroe[/nom]Every time I read one of these reviews and then the gripe about the 5870 costing way over the MSRP price, I have a huge grin.I got mine in early October and at $375 new. No shortage or price gouging here. One happy happy man and every review since has made me happier. On topic:The 5770 seems a better value than the 5830 for a cost limited gamer to me.[/citation]

Bah. I bought two for $399 each from the egg in Jan.
I'll be honest though, HUGE upgrade my gaming laptop (9800m GS) to X-fire 5870's.

[citation][nom]ambientmf[/nom]I still can't understand why it has to be such a huge card. Power draw and temperatures are lower than the 5850, so why it can't be the same size or even slightly smaller is baffling to me...Wouldn't mind stepping up to a 5830 though when the price settles down a bit.[/citation]

The cards that were sent to review sites are for testing only, you will not be able to buy a 5830 like the one in the review - there is no reference heatsink for the 5830 (OEM's don't get a default HSF option) so AMD just made the test cards using reference PCB + HSF for 5870. Looks like Don just wasn't informed for whatever reason.

Considering the current clocks, and the way the ATI 5870 overclocks this can can probably go up to 900Mhz x 1250Mhz giving a far better performance ratio.

No thanks. I have a Vapor-X 4890 right now, with good OC headroom. I won't miss the DX11 and Eyefinity goodies today. So the annual power consumption savings I'll potentially have with the 5830 will not be enough to offset the $40 premium if I do upgrade from this RV790. At $240, it's still expensive and does not match the price/performance ratio of the older cards.

Can't wait for Fermi to kick down some of these price points.

I must say I'm a little disappointed. They should have only disabled a quarter of the ROPs, not half. Also it seems using a 5870 PCB as the reference board was complete overkill. I really expected to see shorter PCBs on it. On the other hand it's a pretty smart move by AMD. They get to move otherwise defective RV870 chips without creating such a big demand for them that they have to cripple alot of chips that would otherwise be 5850s. I was hoping for more ROPs and 160 more shaders, but I guess I'll be getting a 5850 instead.

They don't have competition in the DX11 field so why would you cut the price below your own offerings (Such as remaining 4890's)?

Right now the 4890 is still appealing to buyers, waiting until the inventory for these cards is all but gone, then putting the 5830 price to where it should be is just good business sense.

ATi's in a great position, they've got every performance category covered, once the last generation cards are gone I'm positive you'll see them adjust the pricing of all the 5000 series cards accordingly.

[citation][nom]coldmast[/nom]maybe they should have called it the 5790?[/citation]
Look at the architectuire page, Its clear why this is a 5830, its called the binning process. Take a die, call it 58xx, they are all 100% the same. Test them, if it passes all test its binned for dual card setup. If it fails only the low voltage test, its binned 5870. If it fails, determine whats useable. From there you get 5850 with a few bad shaders, and 5830 with more bad shaders and some bad ROPs. Either way all 4 cards, 5970, 5870, 5850, 5830 all have 2.15 B transistors and start with the same silicon slab.

What a slow year in the progress of video cards since I bought my GTX 275. Graphic cards have been stagnant in terms of performance over the past year in my price range ($200-$250). The only benefit is DirectX 11 for the 5830. I'm not upgrading until I see a 50% performance increase in the same price bracket and by the looks of it I'll be waiting a long time. Also games have been stagnant and nothing has really challenged my GTX 275 except old games, Crysis and GTA 4.

I am the only one who believes AMD and Nvidia are conspiring to take our money? A small unexplained delay in Nvidia's new chip and a strange shortage of AMD's new GPU's to keep prices up. What's the deal, with the next launch Nvidia gets to go first?

I hope the FTC looks into the "shortage" of AMD offerings to see how they manipulate the market and are able to sell computer parts, usually the most discounted market there is after spoiled fruit, at a premium instead of a discount.

Their friend Tom's Hardware won't look into something real like market manipulation, will they?

It's not a shortage john, the 4890 has been end-of-lined, likely to make way for the new 5830.

Discontinuing products to make way for new ones isn't traditionally something that's considered market manipulation.

And earlier posts show why I like ATI's naming scheme. nVidia should take a page out of ATI's book and develop something as easy to remember and understand.

Everyone knows what a 6870 will mean, what a 6770 or 6670 are. It makes it all far simpler. I just hope they don't stop with this system when they hit what would be 10870 and come up with a new naming system that probably won't be as good.

Hmmm, 5870 on Newegg is $40 off for a 24hr special at $379.99, think this might be the day I finally purchase.

This 5830 contraption, at $240 no thank you.

I dont see why a 4890 with 800sp's is still on par or better than the 5830 with 1120sp's. What did they do to that 4890 to make it such a beast, and why didnt they implement that with their 5000 series cards?

people who are disgusted by the size of this card are missing out on the amazing tempurature these things run at, this is a tuners card with tons of oc headroom plain and simple.

this could be the coolest running performance tier video card released in the last ten years.

and if the prices drop around 200 a peice, ill scoop two and xfire them in my case thats already huge and has the room. i think big cards with nice back plates look cool, not to mention i expect a 1ghz gpu clock out of these easy. cant wait to see the 1ghz xfire numbers.

If the prices seem to high, you don't have to buy them. New hardware always has a premium price. It's supply and demand.

I'll wait and see. Right now, I'm torn between the 5770 or the 5850, but I'm leaning towards the 5770.

Yes, you can probably unlock the cores, but the difference so far is negligible. My plan is to buy the Vapor-X 5770, then get another one later in the year, and crossfire them. 2x 5770 > 5870. So, I assume I'm in good hands. While the 5830 looks promising, it's a tough sell for me, being $240. I would buy it at $210.

Well, good for ATI anyway. This card is a good way to get rid of (previously) defunct 5870s, and that's a good thing.

Yeah! Those who predict that the price of ATI 5000 series starts to get lower, when those old 4000 series cards are sold out, or if Nvidia magically manages to produce cheaper cards are most propably right. As we have seen from Nvidias new offerings that are more expensive than their old models, they are allso in the same situation where they have to use all means to sell those older and faster (and more expensive to produce!) cards, untill they will make these new cards more affordable to us. Actually this is a good thing to those who need second card for crossfire or SLI.
They can get good boost to speed, by adding second card and companies can get rid of previous generation cards. Good deal to both sides. Those who wants to have the newest bells and whistles have to pay a premium for a while. I think that in the next christmast season will see lower prised 40nm GPU's.
It would be nice to see what games are shader heavy and what needs more rops. It seems to be so that all those games in this test are more rop's limited. I am not sure if I am wrong, but are shaders needed for visual effects, so every game that is dx9 based (read consoles) not not need a lot of shader power. I am not any GPU expert so someone may enlight what situatuation needs shader power.
