ATI Radeon Mobility 5870 Extreme graphic tearing/shredding

I have and ASUS G73JH and this is the first time ive seen this, up until a week ago. It started off in another game just very slight tearing on textures. In CS:GO however it seems all player models have the ridiculous super saiyan kah meh ah meh ha beams blasting in one direction. Iv'e searched and seen loads of posts about people saying it's a sign on a GPU on it's way out. Please tell me theres a way to fix this. I've tried updating driver rolling them back to previous versions. It also seems to happen no matter what graphics option i use on the game.​

Looks like it may be a bad card. Not a good thing to hear on a laptop.

Have you tried using 1 or 2 driver versions back just in case its a drive issue. This happens from time to time.

I tried the newest on the ati site. As well as the one on the Asus site.

So this was happening then you updated and it got no better?

If you updated and it started, then I would be all for going back(still may be worth trying).

It may be a bad card.

It got no better after upgrading. I did find out about the infamous GSOD associated with the Asus g73JH which was an issues I had while it was still under warranty shouldn't that have maybe noticed my card was goin bad at the time? Or just figured it would last until the warranty was up lol?

Have you check to see if you have dust build up in the heatsinks? laptop heatsinks due to the low profile nature, collect LOTS of dust and clog easy.

See. If you get to this point, you are sure to have issues.

See here's the problem this is my first laptop. I open a desktop I know what I'm looking at. I pull the casing off this and all I see is mettle brackets holding everything in place and have no idea how to go about taking it apart to even be able to see everything.

If it has large vents on the back or side, those will be the heatsinks. Have a look in(they look just like the on in the pic, bunch of fins). If it is, get a can of compressed gas(duster) and give it a few good blasts, this should help dislodge anything. Send some more air in the fan side(if you can see it. if not, more air to those vents.).

I never understood why they made laptop fans so hard to clean. I have an old Compaq that is as easy as can be to clean. I have had some units I had to take fully apart just to clean.

With hwmon, how hot is the video card? Just dont use hwmon on Win8 quite yet.

Looking through the vents in the back i don't see much dust. I dont have any canned air right now and can't really leave to go get one atm. Theres dust in the corners and thats about it.

With hwmon my GPU is at 55C and the CPU is at about the same. This seems high to me. But i'm not exactly sure.

55 is nothing. Worry at over 90-100. As far as i know, the 5870 for laptops is based on the 5770 desktop chip. So 55 is not going to hurt it.

When the dust builds up, its on the fan side, you can not always see it from the outside.

So I had the time to pull the laptop apart today and look inside the vents were dusty though not as bad as the picture you had posted. I sprayed the air an cleared out the dust put everything back together and the problem still persists immediately after startup and opening a game. So my guess is overheating isn't the issue. Although I've had problems with overheating before and as I browse forums I'm not the only one who has with the g73. I'm guessing my card fried due to overheating and now it's just bad.

If the card is removable, you may be able to just replace it.

What kind of temps did you get when gaming?

You may wish to try to use ATI's own software(CCC overdrive tab) to down-clock the card and see if it becomes at least usable.

Well it seems like the problem is getting progressively worse it seems if i attempt to stress the card slightly the whole system just crashes. Movies, Music, general use, all perfectly fine. When i open a game i have problems. I'm thinking about doing clean install of the OS and just seeing if i can sell this on craigslist that added with some saving i can probably get enough to build a new system. It'd be my first time building my own rig, so now we have a completely different conversation entirely lol. This thing has had nothing but issues caused by over heating for the past half a year or so, never buying a laptop for gaming again.

It could have also been bad luck, Many people have had video card failure. The biggest issue is that with a laptop it is not always as easy to replace it.
