I think this is great. But I don't think you could use your ATI GPU without AMD/ATI paying royalties to NVIDIA for that matter.

The best compromise between PhysX and Havok be a standard for physics HAL or API wherein both will have to follow a standard and work on any available hardware whether it be CPU or GPU, AMD or INTEL, ATI or NVIDIA and those other minor players in the CPU, GPU game. By then the basis of their competition will not be on which games it will supported but it would be on their code optimizations which I guess in the end promote the best performance.

[citation][nom]Mr_Man[/nom]@hannibal:I don't think Microsoft should make it. That would turn out like DirectX 10, meaning us Linux-users couldn't play it out of the box with Wine very easily, if at all.[/citation]

Well I would be happy to have OF (open fysics) or what ever it would be called. Now the two different engines causes that nothing get done...

Too bad. Eran from NGOHQ publicly announced AMD/ATI offered no suport whatsoever, while NVidia sent engineers help right away, to get the ati PhysX wrapper working, and working well.
Then Eran of NGOHQ sadly announced that ATI purposefully killed the PhySx wrapper in their next driver release.
ATI squashed PhysX for all the ati card fans.
NOW THAT'S NASTY BUSINESS PRACTICE, WORSE THAN ANYTHING NVIDA HAS EVER BEEN ACCUSED OF.
Wake up ati fans, now ati is rebranding their mobile chips, and they've been losing billions every year, and that's why drivers are not done right and why they don't answer emails to industry professionals after promising to. They don't pay for driver teams like they should, they lose money, they have grey screens of death, terribly tyrannical forums that control any harmed users by banning them after silencing them, and all sorts of other hate filled actions.
Time for ati users to wake up !
Nvidia on the other hand, takes massive profits from their TESLA series and invests it in the gaming community and in assisting developers to deliver GAMES for all of us.
Granted, ati purchasers ALWAYS WHINE about nvidia being and active and hands on company in the gaming developement area, and NEVER take ATI to task for being one big fat zero of nothing and no help in the area.
Ruddy of ATI PR announced publicly as he attacked the nvidia rep 9 months ago at Hexus he had HIS BEST programmer working on a BATMANN AA with the game company who made it, and till this very day, N O T H I N G.
ATI is an empty pocketed LIAR of a company, and it's time all it's fans start putting the blame where it belongs, WITH ATI, who can't pay for driver and dev teams to work with game producing companies !
It's not nvidia's job to make every game work, and work better with proprietary ati hardware!
Here's what NVIDIA has been doing while ati sits on it's butt and whines:
1. cuda 1. openGl 3. openCL 4. PhysX 5. Badaboom 6. Cuda water Just Cause2 6. Bokeh filtering 7. Custom game profile control panel 8. Ray Tracing Car app with all GTX400 series 9. PhysxDemos free, PhysX scrensaver, Free WARMONGER game with ever PhysX nvidia card. 10. Totally new core type and implementation stretching technology barriers for the future beyond previous imagination !
---
Time for the ati fans to face REALITY.
Ati delivers a GSOD set of cards that do a whole lot less than NVIDIA cards. It's not Nvidia's job to make ati fans pleased with ati's massive amount opf problems by fixing them for the lazy, non email answering, not game conscious ati driver team, who doesn't work with game developers !
GET OFF YOUR BUTTS ATI, and do your own work ! Make your own apps, make your own MODS AND EXTRAS! QUIT DEMANDING EVERYTHING BE HANDED TO YOU BY AN OPEN SOURCE FREEBIE COMMUNITY OR MICROSOFT OR SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOES ALL THE WORK AND PUTS ALL THE MONEY AND RESEARCH AND DEVELOPEMENT INTO EVERYTHING WHILE YOU JUST LEACH IT ALL AND WHINE ANYWAY LIKE A BLOOD SUCKING UNGRATEFUL WORM !

Hey fanboy, this is a 2 year old thread. So please go away. You mention AMD renaming mobile cards. Nvidia never did this? Ohh right they have done it for years. Hell the G92 has been used over and over again. And for innovation. Do you mean how Nvidia refused to make the DX10 requirement forcing MS to drop key features so the 8XXX cards could be called DX 10 and not just DX9 with some DX 10 features? Yeah that is innovative. Paying devs to not use DX 10.1? yeah innovative alright. the GXX 300 cards. Ohh right renamed GXX 200 cards. nice work. Before you START AN ALL CAPS FLAMEWARE ON A 2 YEAR OLD THREAD PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!

Ohh yeah PhysX is a CUDA app, it generally falls in with almost everything you list there. OpenCL is not made by Nvidia try Apple buddy. OpenGL invented by Nvidia? Oppsy wrong again. Silicon Graphics created this. Nvidia and other(Yes AMD is in there too) Support it, but did NOT create it.

LOL - A two year old thread YOU ARE IN YESTERDAY !
Take your own advice, don't post in a two year old thread, right, hypocrit ? No ?
Congratulations.
You whined about nvidia(DX,rebranding), then tell me to get my facts right? LOL When you whine about nvidia, it doesn't make anything I've pointed out about ATI incorrect.
Get your phraseology correct !
Do you understand that ? LOL
In fact, you don't claim I got anything wrong about ATI, directly. You know why ? BECAUSE I DIDN'T.
I never said nv made opencl, but their card can use it. I don't know if ati's does, do you ? It might not, open GPU-Z and see the 5 checkable features at the bottom, and see on NVIDIA, all 4 are actively checked, and on ATI, just one, direct compute 5.0.
My post is NEW. It's the OTHER SIDE, what ati has done WRONG.
Glad you read it, thanks for letting me enlighten your mind.
ATI BLOCKED THE PHYSX WRAPPER FOR RADEON CARDS, AS ERANOF NGOHQ HAS PUBLICLY STATED.
YOU ATI FANBOYS ARE WITHOUT PHYSX SUPPORT BECAUSE ATI BLOCKED THAT.
FACE REALITY.

can I run a physx card with my radeon 5830, my motherboard is a GA-X58A-UD3R i7 system.

I really want physx with my system but don't want to switch to nvidia unless there is no other way.

This is not the best place for it(old thread), but generally you can not. ATI does not have driver support for it. You can if on XP or win7 hack the Nvidia drivers and use a second card from Nvidia(even older cards that meet the requirements will work) to run the physx, but it is not supported by either company.

The catch to this is you need a board with 2 pci-e x16 slots, or to mod the boards x1-x4 slots(or mod the card to fit the lower slot) to take a x16 card.

Unless you have many games with PhysX, you may be better off to let the cpu PhysX drivers do the job(they will still give you a good gaming experience) on the games you want it on.

Short answer, the cpu can do some PhysX calculations. You can get more flying particles and stuff with the card. Some games let you max out the physics even without it, but do not recommend it(COH/COV come to mind).

That said, you have plenty of space for a Nvidia card in the 2 lower PCI-E slots. Clearly There is a driver hack you have to perform. That said, I do not currently do this trick(but i do have an old 8800GTX :), hmmmm nah.), so I would look around a bit to see who is having luck and what they are doing. It is pretty much a patch to the Nvidia drives after install or else they shut PhysX(well all CUDA) off when they see ANY non Nvidia card.

This is a list of PhysX compatible cards if you do choose to go this path.

This is still a topical issue !

I bought an ATi 5850 card and cannot play normally Batman AA/Mafia 2 with PhysX (without it, no problem 50-80 FPS). I find it wrong, that I cannot use all of my cards power.

I was thinking about buying GTX 470, but that was before I discovered horrible performance with PhysX on ATi cards. I'm not a fanboy of ATi nor nVidia, I just buy a card which performs best and costs less.

But now I feel scammed with ATi, damn nVidia.

I have a GA-X58A-UD3R mobo and an i7 930 cpu with a radeon 5830 GPU, I really want to get a dedicated physx card, what do I need to do to make it happen, would my motherboard work okay for it? And what would be the best valued card?

Lols Nvidia doesnt create physics, what, you did not read history in pas 15 years in graphics manufacturers??? Physics was created by 3dfx, which made voodoo graphics accelerators. And Nvidia bought 3dfx and Physics integrated to the their cards also SLI technology I have had in 1999 Nvidia Riva TNT2 32mb card with 3dfx Voodoo 2 16 MB. So what about read st. abou history and let me know when you will be wiser ... 😀
