ATi VS Nvidia - Who is on top?

Hey guys,

It's been a year since I have really looked into my computer and I need to upgrade my Video card! When I last was looking at video cards, nvidia was on top. I am not sure how the game has changed...


Currently I have an i7, msi5850 OC, 6gb Ram, 850 antec truepower supply.

I am looking to run 3 monitors, and maybe play some BF3 here and there! I do some editing in the Adobe suite.

I am a little scared about AMD ( I am guessing AMD owns ATi now?). My MSI 5850, gave me a lot of trouble and was super buggy on dual monitors. When you say 7970 is on top this round, what are you comparing that to?

If you're into editing, and with adobe, you might want a nvidia card, with the cuda support being better.
For gaming the 7970 ghz edition is slightly better.
As for the cards in question, for triple monitor, it might not be suffice, for some games, but if you have to choose one of those, i'd pick the evga one.
If your priority is gaming, then a 7970 ghz like the sapphire vapor-x might be better for you.

Remember that it is amd. What do you mean by on top though? You can get a video card from amd (the 7970) that is the same strength, maybe a little weaker that those nvidia ones for $380 righ now. There is also the 7970 ghz edition. which according to tomshardware gpu hierarchy, is stronger than a 680.

According to overclock3d.net, they were able to get a 7950 past a 680. Look at the review. I am not saying every 7950 can oc that well, but the fact that some can, is amazing. So I think amd is way better atm.

the 7970 and 680 trade blows until you go with aftermarket coolers and overclock,after that the 7970 takes off from the 680. Also the 3gb of vram will be much better for multiple monitors. the 7990 is also faster than the 690 but is also louder and draws more power. that can be taken care of with custom watercooling. It depends what you need really. if your running a tri monitor setup and dont plan to game very hard than a 7950 or a 660ti should do the trick .With my 660ti i contantly get over 70 fps on ultra with aa off at 1080p on bf3 ,But the 7950s extra gb of vram will help if you do ever decide to game on 3 monitors.

If you're using adobe I would consider an Nvidia card over it. Also, if you choose an AMD card you will need to purchase an active displayport adapter to support 3 monitors if the card does not come with it. +$20 to that purchase. If that doesn't matter, I'd still go with Nvidia for your needs although I'd prefer a 7970 for straight gaming/price

the 78XX and 79XX Radeon lineup this go around is in general much better price/performance cards compared to any NVidea 6XX or 5XX card available... with the lone exception of the 660ti (which lands squarely between the 7870 and 7950 in both price and performance)

Additionally, the 7970 is slightly faster then the 680 (and $150 cheaper), the 7950 overclocked is almost as fast (sometimes even faster) then the 680 and $300 cheaper... and the 7990 or 2 xfired 7970 are slightly faster then the 690 (and about $200 less), which means that on the top end of the GPU spectrum AMD/ATI has pretty much wrapped up this round in the battle.

That said, it IS just this round... and we'll see what 2013 brings.

Alright everyone, thanks for the info! I have decided to go with a NIVIDA FOR SURE. Now I am debating on a 4gb 670 or a 4gb 680... I was going to do a 690... but then I realized each GPU only gets 2 gb, so that's not gonna work with a 3 monitor setup.

Can anyone point me directly (with a link) to the best brand to get?

well nvidia 690 smokes the 7990 and the 680 smokes the 7970 but soon amd will release new gpus and nvidia around april so you could wait or get maybe a 670 as they are best bang for buck or a 680 if you can afford it i recommend the msi 680 lightning

All wrong. The 7990 is basically the same strength. The 7970 is the about the same strength if not a little stronger. The ghz edition flat out beats the 680. The 7950 is the best value, about the strength of a 670, and can be overclocked past an oced 670. A better value than all of them. I could never recommend a 680. Also the nvidia series is probably coming out first this year. You are using outdated info.

I didn't use a quote that I have only heard idiots use to defend nvidia. Nvidia can be good. Used to have a nvidia card. Got a nvidia card for my cousin when he build a pc. You just said 5 random words with absolutely no data to back it up. So yes the epitome of ignorance.
