Attempting to build PC, GTX 970 not working

So I decided to spend some money to build a gaming PC. I'm pretty sure I've installed everything properly. I updated the Bios using a flash drive to the most recent version from the manufacturer's website. I installed Win 10 using a flash drive, and the computer boots up just fine. I can navigate the settings and sign in and reboot and such with no issues. However, when I power on the PC, the graphics card doesn't appear to be working. If I plug my monitor into the GTX 970's plug thing (I don't know the name of the port, sorry) the screen remains blank. When I plug it into the motherboard's, it works as expected. Upon opening the case and powering it on, I can see that the Msi dragon logo lights up, but the fans do not rotate and the GPU does not appear in the device manager. I tried to download and install some drivers (again, via USB) and the drivers said no compatible devices were located. I should mention I'm installing my stuff through a flash drive at the moment because I forgot to buy a network adapter, and I don't think I have an Ethernet cord (but that's a problem for the near future).
My specs:
Motherboard: Asus Z97 pro-gaming edition
CPU: Intel i7 4790k
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 (connected using the VGA cords which came with the PSU)
PSU: EVGA 850W Gold
Case: Corsair 200r
OS: Windows 10 64 bit
RAM: Corsair vengeance 2x8gb 1600 ddr3

If any other specifications are needed, I'll happily provide them to the best of my capability. I did a quick look through this forum and other website's forums but I've not found anything that worked. I did try putting the GPU into another PCI slot, as well as reinserting it. I don't know what the problem is, but I assume it's probably dead, which would be unfortunate if it's true. I do not have any other GPUs I can use to check if it's the motherboard. Thanks in advance.

Reset the bios defaults, load the OS using the video output on the motherboard, go to nvidia's website and download the most recent driver. Reconnect the video cable to the GPU and start the computer again.

Hello everyone, sorry for the late response, busy day.
So, I checked installation, loaded everything through the motherboard, reconnected the PSU cables, and I discovered I actually missed a second set of power-holes to plug another cord into. I plugged another wire, and now the GPU loads up, turns on, fans spin, and is recognized and I have drivers installed now. So it turns out I was mistaken, I did not in fact plug it in. Thanks a lot for the help, friends!
