[SOLVED] atx compatible form factors

hello all,

recently my motherboard, a m3a78-cm ... i believe the bios is fried and the motherboard must have been inferior, as this was the second one and only lasted a year.

well, i've decided it's time to upgrade, but i would like to continue to use the atx tower i use. yet, in reviewing the different motherboards from another custom build site: pc specs. i've noticed a multitude of different different form factors, which i imagine are for the compliance of a compatible MB.

my personal choice is moving up too a ddr3 memory, am3, at least one pcie 3 slot w/ enough space to support a graphics card that could take up to 3 slots (the max i've seen).

i already purchased a 600w corsair psu, which seems to have more cables than one could know what to do with, 2 6 pin pcie, a 4 pin (not sure of the name, but a alternate power source for the motherboard), tons of sata power cables, plus the old 4 pin female cables (not sure of the name) ... perhaps this is too vague ( a corsair cx 600 and i also have a ante ea 5000)

i purchased a gfx card, wound up being a oem hp rx 460 that i wound up bricking it trying to flash it to get it to work w/ my old legacy bios mb m3a78-cm mobo. yet, i think i will reorder another, this time from probably radeon. (this gfx card takes up two slots)

ok, with all that said, i ran across this article on this forum:
A Basic Guide To Motherboard, Case and Power Supply Form Factors, this gave me an idea w/ many of these other forms that they would work fine w/ the psu i have and the tower ... although the limitations seemed to imply w/ many of the micro (generalized) versions the amount of slots could be reduced.

these are the form factors i ran across and presuming anything w/ atx in the name would be compatible in a regular atx tower: E-atx, Filez-atx, Micro-atx, Mini-atx, XL-atx ... yet many other form factors available as shown on "pc specs" (ie. btx,dtx,etx....etc) link i left above. searching for just "atx" filtered, left very little options. So, with all that stated, am i assuming correctly if the form factor contains "atx" in the name it's compatible w/ a atx tower? am i also correct in assuming that a mini-atx and maybe a micro-atx may not contain enough pci slots? i have another tower ... a micro i believe, where the pci slots are on the opposite side ... so not compatible w/ atx (which every one i have seen is on the left) ... i would have to think this is a form factor of one of these others (ie. btx ... etc), plus the case for that board couldn't even fit physically any dedicated pci (x) of any size, because there's no room ... not sure why they bothered adding the slots. would this be correct logic, these mini/micro boards are probably limited on any upgrades, minus the on-board processes?

any suggestions to clearing this up would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for any suggestions.

You still didn't answer a question on budget though?

Are you sure you actually killed that rx 460?

Because if you have no idea if it's working it may still work.

Its actually fairly hard to 'kill' a gpu with a bad flash.

AMD cards are generally recoverable if you have the right knowledge and system to do so.

I wouldn't keep throwing good money after bad now.

You have drives, a case, and a psu to use. It's time to get onto a more modern platform imo.

Your motherboard was M-ATX.
You can tell because it has 4 expansion slots.
A ATX will have 7 and a ITX will have 1.
They are size specifications which are important mainly for picking a case.

Before you go buying parts willy-nilly, take the time to make a plan and post it here BEFORE you buy.
You have a reasonable full sized power supply which will be ok for all but the smallest of cases.

It looks like you are buying old gen used parts which may not be the right thing to do.
For example, anything with ddr3 ram is obsolete and likely not a good idea.

What is the main use of this pc?

many of the gfx cards i've been looking at, mostly radeon have a length of 12 inches plus. what type of form factor of tower can handle that? the last card i had was 9.25" and barely fit. i'm doing some research while writing this ... trying to be pro-active. it appears if space isn't a issue, this site seems too imply eeatx is the way to go with respect to a tower. if i'm going with (whatever) atx, correct?

i didn't realize the age of ddr3 (07'), 4 (14') or that 5 (20') had just been released. i guess i should start researching ddr4 and compatible amd cpus.

in relation to the gfx card. the rx 460 was said to be compatible and even as old as it is, still selling at over 100 usd. any thoughts on this gfx card ... with respect the low end card (2 GB) has 4 times the amount of memory my current dedicated card has?

this is the site i'm using for the rig build, i guess it's satisfactory. it's telling me if items are compatible and grey out options based on the chosen parts.

the main use is pretty much everything. gaming ... no streaming, audio/vid player, and other common desktop procedures. so with that said, i don't need top of the line nor do i need the bottom. i suppose room to grow and as the parts become more old, i imagine the cost will come down and i will upgrade accordingly. it's what i've done in the past.

What is your budget for the build? That is really the main thing here. The real question you should ask is "I have this much money, and these are my current parts that work, what should I get for gaming for blah blah type games". You said you wanted to use your existing case but did not list the case model, so there is no way to know what card can fit in it. List some details about your setup, monitor, case, what parts are still good, etc.. and how much you were thinking of spending on upgrades. For a full new computer build for gaming, even for 1080 lower settings in new games you are looking at about $4-500 if you re-use your case and power supply. Gaming video card that is worth buying will be a tad under $200, motherboard about $80, CPU $80-110, RAM $60-80 new drive another $50-100 depending on space you need.

Well, here's the pickle. i have two current towers in front of me ... i believe both micro (14" x 14.5") my primary case, in which i was running the m3a78-cm motherboard looks more like a compatible model, as opposed to the other, which is a hp/compaq no-name MB. i was really ready to pull out the saw's all to make this baby work.

the power connectors are all f-ed up and i can't find a name or model # of the MB on the ddr3/am3+ board sh48uc#aba

i honestly see how i can get my PSU work w/ MB ... very weird power connectors ... i don't even see the 24 pin connector (i thought that was a standard ... could have got the count wrong, yet this board is only using ... well, really strange connectors for any board i've seen, 2 4pin, 1 6pin, another that looks like most normal front/back -end additions (usb, audio ... etc)

this sadly reminds of days ago and seeing many Dells coming through my office and having to tell the customer, i've tried before ... i can't find an exact model, which w/ windows leads to a full re-install of the OS. ethically, i had to tell them to just walk away and buy another pre-built (oem) if that's what they want.

I'm ranting ... just frustrated. seems like towers are going to the way side. even if i get a sim mobo (am3+), i'll still need to find a decent gfx card ... 3rd generation, been looking at the prices of the 4th gen and 5th.

if it's not obvious, i'm living on a fixed budget. i have 6G of ddr3, Corsair PSU 600W, Plextor DVD Writer ... and some other "no-name" in the HP, 2 singular TB Hard drives and imaged everything b4 this. although, if history repeats itself ... i'm going to have to reinstall windoze 10.

to end this converse, which i might throw into a new thread:

this is what AIDA threw up, i hope it answers any questions about where trying to get ... big bonus points w/ a suggested gfx card ... had my eye on a rx 460 ... it worked with this crazed ibm desktop, so i figure compatible w/ the dual core, memory,

i ran across this site for ASRock, which they seem to have good reviews. the list although i found over-whelming. if i try to keep it simple, a mobo am3+. No one ever answered my question if the atx "full tower" or a eatx model tower is going to be reversibly compatible with some of the smaller boards ... i don't like the idea of a smaller board, it seems due to size constraints, a limitation on card spots and also heat ventilation. (the latter, electronics worst enemy ... heat, it's a four letter word)
 
Im not sure what your actual question is.

The hp board is proprietary, it runs solely on 12v as opposed to standard manufactured boards.

Its also not an am3 board anyway, at least not in usability, the max it supports is an old phenom 2.

Its not worth the hassle irregardless of having a low budget.

i wish i had some specs to show ya, but as you already stated, it's proprietary ... Dell used to do the same thing.

so my question is, once again with the parts i have ... i figure i can use the memory (no doubt), the cpu ... guess i need to see if it's some weird form factor:

preferably, i wouldn't want to spend more than i have too. both of the above are an upgrade for me. with the addition of a worthy gfx card ... which in that case i've noticed the rx 460 chipset has from 4x - 8x the vram than my old card. i've already tested it on the OEM board ... it works fine.

these are my thoughts as of now. it seems a couple of you think getting the latest and greatest seems like the best path (ddr5, i guess that would have to include compatible cpu ... etc) it would be a custom built from the ground up that far exceeds what i would need.

so, to reiterate again. what would be a good mobo compatible w/ what i have?

what is a quality gfx card, even if it's above the limitations of a suggested mobo, something i could easily port to another upgraded rig if necessary?

i don't need the latest and greatest, if that were the case i would just order a fully stocked gaming platform.

Are you sure you actually killed that rx 460?

Because if you have no idea if it's working it may still work.

Its actually fairly hard to 'kill' a gpu with a bad flash.

AMD cards are generally recoverable if you have the right knowledge and system to do so.

I wouldn't keep throwing good money after bad now.

You have drives, a case, and a psu to use. It's time to get onto a more modern platform imo.

Thats a setup for the modern age which is so much more powerful than you're used to its actually incomparable.

It still needs a gpu!

I looked at the ryzen integrated cpu's but they're overpriced at the minute, 6 months ago that amount of money would have got you a 3400g which is capable of 720p gaming without a gpu.

budget ... probably at the most i was looking at 400 usd or less. i usually can find the cheapest, by opting for refurbished or used ... most of my treasure hunts end on e-bay ... thus the price could fluctuate quiet a bit. soooo, budget might not necessarily be based on new components or the cheapest price. i'll just leave it at that.

yeah, i fried the vbios, hp rx 460. it was an hp who now i'm learning is starting to have their boards custom made. i've ran to this in the past. well, i used a custom rom and flashed the bios, no go. altered the vbios further, still no go. at that latter point i could n't get the board to show at all, so that i could flash the original rom back. i used the paperclip method, no go. soldered pins #1 & #8 ... the ground and VCC ... would've been nice if they had a jumper on the damn thing ... that makes too much sense. well on that final solder attempt, one of the legs got burnt off the bios chip. really, soldering was i last ditch effort, as i didn't have the proper grade.

i found it quite easy. hex edit the rom and flash that to the gfx card.

yeah, the gfx card is going to be a pain. the rx 460, radeon, blah, blah i've seen prices shoot above the 200 usd range.

most of the parts ya listed are coming from more of the higher priced companies ... albeit, it sheds some light on the fact that i can go with 4th generation parts. i won't be shopping at Amazon or Best Buy. i usually wind up finding a company using e-bay as their hub and much, much more cheaper for the same thing.

i'm already using pcpartpicker.

tx btw, with a rough template, perhaps it's not as impossible financially to invest in something more insynch w/ the time.
 
If you buy the parts listed above and add in a 1650 Supper card you will be at about $400 for a new system with mostly new parts. You can buy a used working tower with a decent PSU and get a 1650 Super for it to get a good 1080 resolution gaming system also, but will cost nearly the same. Trying to save money without being able to test the parts or buying some off-brand cheap parts will usually end up costing you more money in the long run.
