Hey All,

First post here. I just completed a new build using the Asus Z390 Tuf Pro Gaming (Wifi). I've been having an issue with the audio.

I can get audio outputs from my bluetooth speakers. However, when I plug headphones into the front or back panels, the computer does not recognize that I've plugged anything in. The progression of what I've tried is as follows:

-Updated chipset driver and then all other drivers via Asus Q-installer. It says my drivers are up-to-date.
- Updated Bios. Enabled HD Audio in Advanced Settings.
-Uninstalled the Intel Audio Driver. I now have installed "High Definition Audio Device" in my device manager. I installed via the driver download Asus has on their site for my motherboard.
-Double-checked all connections on my actual hardware (i.e. front panel connector)

One other thing to note is that I downloaded and "installed" the Realtek audio driver from the Asus site, but it doesn't say in Device Manager that it actually got installed.

I spoke to Asus via phone and chat, and they weren't very helpful either time. Essentially they suggested I do all the things I already tried, and then it culminated in "Send the Motherboard in for Warranty Checkup".

If anyone can point me in a direction for troubleshooting, I'd appreciate it.

Build Configuration:
OS: Windows 10 64-Bit
Motherboard: Asus Z390 Tuf Pro Gaming (Wifi)
CPU: I5-9600
GPU: None currently installed
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4

Bios and Driver Versions:
Bios: American Megatrends Inc. 0805, 9/21/2018
Chipset: Intel Chipset Driver 10.1.16.5

Management Engine Interface: 1815.12.0.2021
Audio: High Definition Audio Device Microsoft Driver 10.0.17763.1
LAN: Intel LAN Driver 12.17.10.7
Graphics: Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver 24.20.100.6291
Wifi: Intel Wifi Driver 20.60.0.7
Bluetooth: Intel Bluetooth Driver 21.10.1.1

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi, Check if HD Audio enabled in BIOS. If enabled, check in Device manager what device is listed under Audio.

Hey thanks for the reply. I didn't realize how fast I'd get one!

HD Audio is enabled in Bios. Device listed under audio is "High Definition Audio Device". Maker of the device in properties is "Microsoft".

If I click on the little speaker on the taskbar, it immediately begins troubleshooting. Don't know if that helps.

Thanks.

Hey Mandark,

I did download the driver and run the setup as admin. I got that driver from the same link - direct from the ASUS website.

Notably, when I install the driver it doesn't seem like anything happens upon reboot. The same "High Definition Audio Device" is under device manager. I would something along the lines of "Realtek HD Audio" instead, as per some previous builds I've done.

I've tried uninstalling all of the drivers under "Sound, Video, and Gaming" in device manager, installing the Realtek driver, and rebooting. No change, and all the previous drivers come back.

Thanks.

darn it, realtek has such issues on windows 10..... hmmmm when you did the clean install, did you test if audio worked? I usually let windows install the right drivers when I first set it up. if everything works, I don't install any other drivers. i usually just need to install AMD video drivers to make the setup do what i need it to do for my docked monitor.

try booting safe mode, use DDU to remove all your realtek drivers, then boot normal into windows and let windows config the audio, then test it, if it works DO NOT install any other drivers

If you not using a video card, your using the Intel Processor Video, that also has its own sound device. The driver is included in the Intel VGA driver package.

You can manage multiple audio devices in Windows Control Panel>Sound. Choose the one you want to use.

I did test if the audio worked. The original driver "Intel HD Audio...." did not work (besides Bluetooth as mentioned in OP).

I will try removing all the Realtek drivers with DDU in safe mode and see if that helps. Won't be able to get to it until probably Wednesday though.

Calvin, I will also check this out. Thanks for the tip. I do know though that when clicking on the speaker icon on the taskbar that I get no options for audio devices (immediately begins troubleshooting.

Thank you.

Alright, so I installed DDU --> booted into safe mode --> Uninstalled all Realtek drivers and set windows driver installation to default (automatically installs...) --> restart into regular mode --> no difference.

Also, I tried managing audio devices in the control panel - no audio devices show up as valid.

From the looks of it, I don't know what type of driver I have installed. After uninstalling (but before rebooting) the only driver left was "High Definition Audio Device". After rebooting, some wireless headset drivers were reinstalled but that is it. No change as far as audio functionality. Still sounds like I don't have the right driver.

Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help so far.

If thats the only audio device you see from the device manager, then it looks like Realtek is not getting installed.

It should specifically say "Realtek" on the device name, unless someone can refute that.

Anyway, there are 2 other versions (6.0.1.8516 & 6.0.1.8496) of the driver available for download, try installing off of those.

I would return the board, to be replaced.

Hmmm that's was Asus Tech Support said to do as well. Still under warranty so it isn't a problem. I'm outside Microcenter's return window, or I would simply return it there. As it is, I'll have to send it in for warranty repair.

That's what I was thinking too. I'll try to install those other versions today and see what happens. Hopefully I can some results. If not, looks like a return.

Thanks to everyone for your help in this. Its great how many thoughtful responses I got.

Will keep you updated as to what happens with the earlier driver versions and the warranty replacement.
