Ok, I have two hard drives, one has Win2000 on it, it is set as master and it's plugged into the middle IDE connector on the ribbon. The second drive has regular boot files on it (flashes up win 98 screen but then ends in C: prompt because Win98 was not actually installed). This drive is either on slave or cable select at the moment I believe, and is on the last connector of the IDE cable.

The boot sequence goes floppy, then HDD-0 then ls something or other I think (I have no idea what that one is referring to). Anyway I boot up and it goes into Win 2000 just fine. Then after about a minute the computer automatically reboots itself!! What is causing this? When I unplug the 2nd HD the computer is stable..

I am very puzzled! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you're using an ATA66/100 IDE cable, then you're master HD should go on the last connector on the cable, and the slave should go on the middle connector. Give this a try. Also make sure that the one that you are not sure is either cable select or slave, is configured as slave.

Ok I'll give it a shot tonight.. although I had the master on the last connector before, and then it would boot up off the slave drive instead, labelling it as the C: even though bios said the right designations of slave and master.

It is a Ata 100 cable though.

Just make sure that neither is configured as cable select, one should be master, and the other slave. Is one of them a Western Digital by the way? WD drives require that a jumper be set if there is going to be a slave drive, if not, then no jumper needs to be placed.

Nope, the master drive is a Maxtor, and the slave is a Quantum. Does that mean I can just take the jumper off the Quantum drive? Oh well, I'll just set it as slave

another possibility could be that your PSU aint got enough juice....

1 hard drive is ok... 2 pushes it off the edge.

and ive never had any problems where my master is in relation to the cable.

i.e.
primary master ata100 hdd - middle of cable
primary slave ata33 hdd - end of cable

secondary master ata66 dvd - end of cable
secondary slave dma burner - middle of cable.

p.s. for added incompatibility i also use OVERSIZED rounded 60cm ata cable.
and i still CANT get any instability lol
stable as a rock.

(well cept for the motherboard slowly dying, but thats my fault for overclocking)

Well it's a 300W powersupply .. originally I had a CDRW,CDROM, DVDROM and the one HD connected. So now I want to switch to two HD's.

I am so frustrated .. it just reboots automatically, like someone just hits the reboot button. There is no error messages or anything, which makes this so hard to figure out what is wrong! :frown:

Well I didn't actually try the slave drive by itself, but I had it in another computer to back up some files onto it. And it was also the slave in that case and worked fine. This other computer was a Cel 366 or something (not overclocked) so the PSU was lower than my 300W. It was running 2 HD's and one DVDROM and my CDRW ..

Well I can't try the slave drive separately on my computer with the problems cuz I deleted the boot ini files hoping that would make it stop rebooting :/ guess not.

My motherboard is a DFI AK75 .. I think the FDD controller has died on it cuz I can't get the floppy to work (this problem has been there for a few months now 🙁 I wonder if there is more problems with the mobo??

oh yes.... i would put a small wad of cash on it. mobo troubles are like mushrooms after the rain.

i too am having some mobo issues, namely my IDE controller keeps spitting the dummy once on a cold boot. very annoying. and yes, things like that cauze spontaneous reboots.
