Avivo video converter.

I'm starting to think about my next system build which probably won't happen for a little while anyways. But something caught my eye today that I found very interresting...the ATI Avivo Video Converter.

Has anybody tried this out yet, and is there really a drastic increase in speed for video converting? I'm "ok" with my current setup because I just batch everything to be processed at night. But I'm a big fan of immediate gratification.

Also, since it's using the GPU for most of the processing rather than the CPU, would a dual card setup see any major speed increases? I really don't play any high end video games these days so i wasn't really considering going with crossfire, but if I can use it for video encoding, it may be back on my list.

It works great, I just converted a 86MB file to a MPEG4 at 41MB in under two minutes while browsing and watching TV on my PC.

I've used it, it's awesome. Very fast.

Haven't heard any info about crossfire & avivo, though. Interesting thought, I wonder if it'd help.

anyone know if you MUST have an x1000 series card or does it work on any ati... I assume you must have an avivo equiped card but just thought i would ask.

that's what ATI says, but I'm not at home to test it out on my AIW9800. It really is time for an upgrade, lol.

Please point to me where ATi says that? The X1x00 cards have hardware to assist encoding/decoding, it won't work on any other platform. There are some software upgrades to the regular drivers, but you don't even get the full AVIVO options bar on any card other than the X1x00 series.

I asked long ago, and that's the way it is. There will be improvements, but the R9xx0 and Xx00 generation cards will not get it. That's from the top down from Terry/CatalystMaker to the Beta testers at Rage3D.

We did get new motion/vector adpative de-interlacing added to the Cat 6.1 drivers, but there won't be the nice conversion boost because the hardware just doesn't support it.

That's why the next card is an X1x00 card. I was hoping for an X1700 notebook chip to be announced soon, but alas, no luck.

Just wish they'd launch the X1700 though so I can get performance and power saving with all the AVIVO stuff thrown in.

Finally got a response from ATI support 2 weeks later. The video converter will not take advantage of a crossfire setup.
