Recently read that you can uprade an existing b450 for the next gen Ryzen 3000 chip without the need for an older gen housed inside. Is this true? Im looking to get ether a 3600x or 3700x but want to save some coin on the motherboard.

As long as there's a BIOS update for the motherboard and it's been updated then yes it will work.

True but they needs to have BIOS available and the ASUS B450F (my board for example) has still yet to release a update for the new CPU's.

When picking a board the OP is going to want to find one that has the BIOS out and then may still need to find a place such as Microcenter that can do the update for a small fee.

The B450-F has 3 BIOS updates that are supposed to support the new 3000 series CPU's:

Version 2008
2019/03/15 9.25 MBytes
ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING BIOS 2008
Update AGESA 0070 for the upcoming processors and improve CPU compatibility.
ASUS strongly recommends installing AMD chipset driver 18.50.16 or later before updating BIOS.

And the newer versions 2202 and 2301.

I spoke to ASUS support staff last week that says that those BIOS versions don't support the 3rd gen and that there currently working on it.

According to this some Asus boards (including the Strix B450-F BIOS 2301) already have a BIOS version released that supports the Ryzen 3000 series CPU's:

Gaming Pro Carbon AC or whatever it's called (they should have added a few more names to make sure to point out just how "premium" this B450 board is).

FWIW, just watched a Hardware Unboxed review on the 3700X and at the end he recommended the following MBs:

MSI B450 Tomahawk
MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC

The rationale included ability to 'easily' update Bios, PCIe 4.0 not yet worth the cost. For higher end CPUs the X570 would be recommended.

Sadly athere have quite a few people saying that the 2406 BIOS is very Buggy and that the 2301 BIOS works better.
And from what I can find the MSI, ASRock and Gigabyte B450 and X470 Boards all have similar BIOS issues.
So I'd wait a while until the BIOS bugs get worked out before using a 3000 Series CPU on ANY B450 or X470 board.

Funny that you say that, I tried updating 2301 to 2406 last night and when I tried to do it via ASUS's auto update program in the BIOS it said 2301 was the newest but it still shows up in the BIOS update page. Sounds like it still may be available but ASUS isn't allowing it on the EZ update feature till the bugs are worked out.

Because most of the new X570 boards cost anywhere from $100 to $300 more than a good B450 or X470 MB and the only real improvement so far is that the X570's allow you to use a PCIe 4.0 SSD.
I personally have No doubt that once the bugs get worked out of the BIOS updates that my current ROG Strix B450-F will run a 3600, 3600x or a 3700x just fine.
And sadly many of the new X570 boards seem to have BIOS issues which will need to get fixed too.

Thanks for the post; so the earlier mb's are less expensive than equivalent 570's? Is that apples to apples functionality and features?

If so, given a 3700X and two M.2 PCIe slots, what boards would be recommended? Also, don't need WiFi or RGB.....

But if I was going to buy a MB right now for a 3700x I would probably look into the better X470 MBs.
Or if I needed to save some cash a Good B450 MB like the one I currently own or an MSI B450 Pro Carbon AC.
You can use this chart as a reference as to which B450 and X470 MBs will best handle the 3000 series CPUs.
