Backup windows XP SP1 to external hard drive

Which company's external hard drive will work to backup my XP Home SP1 operating System. I can get by with the smallest GB size made....100, 250, 500 etc.

I need to backup before attempting to upgrade to XP SP3.

Sadly, that is not true. A number of external drive makers require XP with SP 3 already on board...which doesn't help me at all...stuck in the SP 1 time warp.

You don't have to use the software that came with the external drive. You have to use backup software that's compatible with your OS. Have you looked into Acronis or Easeus solutions?
