Hi everyone

My friend just bought an used computer and she has a very strange problem.

The chip is a p3 733 at stock speed(when i got it anyways), and running windows 2000. The problem is, the OS gives a lot of errors about iexplorer has crashed. I thought it might be an OS problem, so I put win98se on for her.
Now the computer has problems reading CDs!! I know these CDs are fine because my computer reads them perfectly. Sometimes, the computer also freezes.

What do u think the problem is? Could the original owner overclocked it so much and burned the chip out??

Thanks

Sparks

PS..the motherboard is an asus CUV4x, and it has a 128MB of PC133 ram :)

should do a TOTAL FORMAT , install win 98 se only / not win 98 , just with the win 98se disk will work if you have win98 disk handy
cpu should be OK just driver / software probs
start from fresh
reinstall everything , but one at a time

Hi

Is there anything i can do to make it more stable?

I ripped all the cards out of the computer except the video card 😉 Do u think the newer motherboard drivers will make it good? :)

I highly doubt that the processor is bad. If re-installed the OS from scratch does not work get a hold of bootable diagnostic disk and check the mem, MB, and HD.

you could also check to see if you have a flakey power supply. i had intermitent locks and crashes until i got my antec 300w power supply

Hey, that's right! I forgot, my CPU used to get very hot until I GOT RID of my Antec power supply and put in a generic one (12v had been too low at 11.6v and the fan had been running slow).

Suicide is painless...........

I would have thought so, but my utility showed otherwise. So I replaced it, and now my voltage is closer to optimal and my fan runs faster, so my CPU is cooler.

Suicide is painless...........

i have never had a problem with 12v that was actually running 11.86v.
what was killing me was my 3.3v kept dropping to 3.13v!

you can try teh new drivers, bad if you have got a spare old VGA card around it would be worth trying that as well..

Antec seems to be source of alot of problems for different people. crappy power supplies and heatsink/fans.

A name I will avoid in the future.

I did a clean reinstall and I used Sandra soft to do the CPU burn in test for 1000 times :) the machine seems to be very stable now..Thanks everyone

Oh yeah..those 4-in-1 drivers helped too

Ahh... The infamous new VIA drivers get installed and suddenly everything stops crashing. I had that problem. I had a P3 750 machine at work running Windows 2000. (Hey, I didn't pay for it or select it, so it's not my fault.)

Every so often it would just crash.

Then I installed the 4 in 1 drivers. It didn't crash anymore.

It only added to the large pile of misgivings I've had about VIA. VIA chipset motherboards are one of two reasons why I haven't yet bought an AMD system.

I'm glad to hear that the system is stable again. I know how annoying it is to have a system that locks up for no good reason (according to the ASUS PC Probe there was no valid reason) three times a day.

This isn't even my computer. It's an used computer i bought my "friend". I didn't make any $$ off this deal, and everytime her computer crashes, she calls me up, no matter how late it is. She made me to go over to her house a couple times too, just to fix it. Everytime, it costs me like 10 bucks on gas just to get over tehre ..lol

This is the last time i'm fixing her computer i swear :) next time, she's taking it to a shop
