Hello all,

I have a supermicro model # NO WHQL that unfortunately I think took a surge from some lightning. The machine operates fine, however; I believe it took out one of the Ethernet ports. I've been searching online and not finding answers. Is it possible to replace the ports? I don't know why, but I seem to recall from previous years seeing someone replace a Ethernet port that was built into the motherboard. (maybe I'm mistaken) Adding a card isn't going to be an option here, might have to bite the bullet and order an new motherboard but thought I would ask first if anyone has seen this done or if it's possible.

Thanks

A little more info. When the internet is plugged into the port in question I can sometimes get internet althou it is extremely slow and struggles to load pages. (typically will only load google) Ping tests work (but usually have about a 20% packet drop, rarely is it 100% success).

I would try one or all of these, way cheaper than a new motherboard.

even if you bought all three of them your looking at 12 bucks.
as long as you do not require gigabit ethernet a USB 2.0 to ethernet adaptor should be fine. I have the one from my old wii and it works in windows and linux

unfortunately you cannot replace a network plug on a motherboard with any available consumer tools.

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately these won't work. The server in question houses the firewall and supplies internet access to roughly 130 individuals. It would need to be gigabit. I think you hit the nail on the head, if I'm not mistaken it was a dell representative that came to work on that server I was talking about and like you said it was probably specialized tools that he was able to fix the issue there. Which unfortunately I won't have available to me here. Now the question I guess is to find out whether this is covered under warranty, or if I just scrap the server all together. Blah... Thanks thou!

Yes it does. So if I used this usb adapter to bring the internet into the box, would the second port (I assume is still working but hard to test at this point) be able to push the internet back out to main switch? Just not sure if the USB overrides the built in Ethernet ports. If that even makes sense on what I'm trying to say? But for the cost might be well worth attempting it regardless.
